Ibrahimovic looking to score first against his ex club

ROME (AFP) - Zlatan Ibrahimovic will be looking to break new ground when he faces former employers Ajax in the Champions League on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old striker has never scored against the Dutch side cheap nfl jerseys
and coming into his fifth match between Ajax and Milan, he has yet to find the net in one of those encounters.
Ibrahimovic spent three years in Holland having been bought from Malmo FF in 2001 at the age of 20 and although he scored 46 goals in 106 matches, he failed to find the net in any of four Champions League encounters against Milan in 2002/03 and 2003/04.
He has since faced his old club three times, twice in the Champions League with Juventus and also in a friendly with Inter Milan, but again couldn't get his name on the scoresheet.
However, the Swede's record so far in the red and black of Milan has been excellent with four goals in five matches, including a brace in Milan's 2-0 defeat of Auxerre in their Champions League opener.
While much attention will be focused on Ibrahimovic—known simply as Zlatan amongst the Ajax faithful—on his return to Amsterdam, for Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri the game will be about sacrifice.Cowboys jersey

"The match against Ajax will be everything but easy," he said on Milan's Chargers jersey
departure from Malpensa airport.
"It's always hard to play on their pitch, they're a young side with great technique.
"It's a vital match for us in terms of progression. We need to be careful and to repeat the sacrifice we showed against Genoa (a 1-0 win on Saturday).
"However, on a technical level we need to improve but I'm sure we will."
Milan have been far from brilliant this season, picking up just two wins in their opening five Serie A games.
They sit only two points off leaders Inter and Lazio, though, and vice-president Adriano Galliani insists their difficult start is due to the high level of play in Italy.
"We're improving, the league is close," he said. "Our league is the one where the leaders have the lowest number of points in Europe, 10 after five matches.
"That means it's very tight.
"Everything has changed, the small teams that once came to the Bears jersey
San Siro just to defend now come to play and attack.
"An excellent school has been born of the new wave of coaches. But in any case, the best normally wins the league and we hope it will be us."

Talking Shop Barber Brothers Face Off This Week

IRVING, Texas - A day after some of the Cowboys' outspoken veterans held a players-only meeting, the brother of one team captain said the roster has a leader-by-example in Marion Barber.
Dominique Barber, the third-year safety in nfl jerseys
Houston who grew up with the Cowboys' starting running back, said his elder sibling may be viewed as quiet by outsiders, but can also be vocal, and is an extremely hard worker.
While Marion rarely conducts interviews, Dominique spoke to reporters on a conference call on Tuesday, discussing his brother and their first opportunity to face one another in a regular-season game, Sunday's noon tilt at Reliant Stadium.
"He's obviously a lot quieter than I am," Dominique said. "Once you get to know him and once he gets comfortable around people, he talks a lot. It's kind of funny that everybody thinks he's so quiet and this and that. He's a loud guy and a jokester. … He definitely got the quietness from my dad."
Cowboy’s players voted Marion a captain for the second time in his career in 2010, and many hail him as a great teammate. Dominique said the running back's work ethic sets a good example for those around him.
"He just works so hard every day," Houston's Barber said. "It makes my life Buffalo Bills jersey
so much easier because I can ask him things he does in the off-season. He does sprints, he runs hills, and he lifts a lot of weights, just like a barbarian. He does all the little things and sacrifices and takes care of his body.
"He lets me know what he's got going on, what he's doing, how many hills he's running. He lost so much weight; he's in great shape. Being 220 (pounds), down from 235 or whatever he was last year, he's just a specimen." Steelers jersey

The son of former University of Minnesota and New York Jets running back Marion Barber Jr., Dominique and MBIII were Gopher teammates for one year, 2004. They've lined up across from one another twice in the preseason, but Sunday marks their first Barber Bowl with regular season implications.
"It's extremely exciting," Dominique said. "The fact that it's my brother I'm playing Steelers jersey
against, it's a dream come true. Any brothers that play football would probably say the same thing. … Our relationship is extremely close. We talk every day, whether it be text message or talk on the phone. Our relationship isn't about wins and losses. It's about the love. We get that from our family. We're really close and our relationship is something special, and I love him to death."

RB committee: Who's the top back?

Indianapolis Colts jersey
The fantasy backfield committee update will help you understand what’s happening in the world of running back tandems.
The four "worry levels" – High, Medium, Low, and Non-Existent – are subject to change on a weekly basis.
And now, without further ado, is our look at the backfield status for each of nfl jersey
the NFL’s 32 teams.
Arizona Cardinals
Committee worries level: Medium
Week 2: Tim Hightower (11 carries, 115 yards, TD; two receptions, nine yards); Chris "Beanie" Wells (DNP - injury)
Season: Hightower (24 carries, 169 yards, 2 TD; six receptions, 49 yards); Wells (no stats)
Comment: Wells thinks he’s going to play this week after missing the first two games with a bruised knee. His coach isn’t so sure. Hightower’s running stats from Week 2 look great, but remember that there was an 80-yard TD in there, and they don’t happen a lot.
Atlanta Falcons
Committee worries level: Low
Week 2: Jason Smelling (24 carries, 129 yards, 2 TD; five receptions, 57 yards, TD); Michael Turner (nine carries, 75 yards)
Season: Smelling (26 carries, 133 yards, 2 TD; six San Francisco 49ers jersey
receptions, 61 yards, TD); Turner (28 carries, 117 yards; one reception, seven yards)
Comment: Turner injured his groin last week, but he was cleared to come back into the game before his coaches decided to keep him out of the blowout win over the Cardinals. Smelling looked like Superman in relief of Turner, but he’s headed back to a second-fiddle role.
Baltimore Ravens
Committee worries level: Medium
Week 2: Ray Rice (16 carries, 87 yards; four receptions, 30 yards); Willis McGhee (three carries, 10 yards)
Season: Rice (37 carries, 130 yards; six receptions, 49 yards); McGhee (nine carries, eight yards, TD; one reception, minus-six yards)
Comment: Coach Jim Herbage says Rice will get more work this week against the Browns. Woo-hood!
Buffalo Bills
Committee worries level: High
Week 2: Marsh awn Lynch (17 carries, 64 yards); Fred Jackson (nine carries, 39 yards, TD); C.J. Spiller (one carry, three yards; four receptions, 23 yards)
Season: Lynch (20 carries, 77 yards); Spiller (eight carries, nine yards; eight receptions, 31 yards); Jackson (13 carries, 58 yards, TD; two receptions, zero yards)
Comment: Lunch’s busy game against the Packers threw a big Buffalo Bills jersey
wrench into this situation, didn’t it? Head coach Chan Gaily also talked earlier this week about using Spiller more in the coming weeks, and Jackson had more than 1,400 yards from scrimmage last season, so we can’t forget about him. What a mess – bench all of ‘me until further notice.

24 sep 10 Mathews has 104 yards, no touchdowns and two fumbles

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Impressive in their first game under coach Pete Carroll, the Seattle Seahawks couldn’t build on that performance in their first road contest of the season.
The Seahawks look to bounce back Sunday against the visiting San Diego Chargers, who will try to put a disappointing season opener further behind them with a second consecutive victory.
Seattle (1-1) opened Carroll’s tenure with a 31-6 rout of nfl jerseys
San Francisco, but wasn’t able to sustain that momentum in a 31-14 defeat to Denver last week. The Seahawks committed four turnovers - three coming on Matt Hasselbeck(notes) interceptions - and were limited to 22 1/2 minutes of possession time.
That performance may not bode well against San Diego, which grabbed four interceptions - two by Antoine Cason(notes) - and recovered a pair of fumbles in a 38-13 home victory over Jacksonville last week. Philip Rivers(notes) passed for 334 yards and three TDs, and Mike Tolbert(notes) added a pair of scoring runs to help the Chargers (1-1) rebound from a 21-14 loss at Kansas City.
One of those TDs came after rookie Ryan Mathews(notes) sprained his right ankle. The status of Mathews is uncertain for this week, and coach Norv Turner would only say that he was sore.
“Whether (Mathews) could’ve or couldn’t have returned, I wasn’t comfortable having him return,” Turner said Monday. “Depending on the severity of it, I don’t want an injury that might be a one-week injury turn into a six-week injury.”
Mathews has 104 yards, no touchdowns and two fumbles, which have led to 10 points for opponents. Tolbert, who had a career-best 82 yards on 16 carries against the Jaguars, would likely start if Mathews can’t go.
There’s no question who will be under center this week for the Seahawks, who are 49ers jersey
staying with Hasselbeck despite four interceptions in the first two games.
“We’re going with Matt and he’s the guy that’s going to take us,” Carroll said. “We’re going to ride him and make sure we support him and do all the things around him to support him and make sure he’s successful.”
Hasselbeck has won two of his three starts against the Chargers but threw a pair of interceptions in the most recent matchup, a 20-17 loss Dec. 24, 2006. That snapped Seattle’s five-game win streak in the series.
The Seahawks have taken 10 of 13 overall meetings with San Diego and five of seven at home.
The Chargers, though, have won five in a row versus NFC opponents and three straight on the road. Rivers is 11-5 as a starter against the NFC.
Rivers completed a career-worst 33 percent of his passes in the 2006 meeting - his only game against the Seahawks - but threw a pair of touchdowns. Both were to Vincent Jackson(notes), who remains with the team while holding out for a new contract.
The Chargers didn’t trade Jackson, who will complete a three-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy this week, by the Wednesday afternoon deadline. Had Jackson been moved, he could have played as early as Week 5.
Now, he’ll have to serve another a three-game suspension on the roster exempt list if he does sign with the Chargers or is sent elsewhere.
Seattle will be without starting linebacker Leroy Hill(notes) for Saints jersey
several games with an injury to the Achilles’ area of his right leg. The injury was originally announced as a calf strain.
Hill made his season debut last week after being suspended for the season opener following his arrest in Georgia on a marijuana possession charge.

Cammalleri thriving in pressure-mad Montreal

Steelers jersey
A little more than a year ago, after he had chosen the Montreal Canadiens as a free agent, Michael Cammalleri was working out at home in Toronto. He was sliding from side to side on a dry board – back and forth, back and forth – while talking to a former NHLer and a fellow former Michigan Wolverine, Cam Stewart.
“Cammy, what are you doing?” Stewart teased him. nfl jerseys
“Why did you sign with Montreal? If you don’t get 30, they’re going to be whistling you right out of there.”
Cammalleri didn’t break stride – back and forth, back and forth – and didn’t miss a beat. He looked at Stewart.
“Thirty?” Cammalleri said. “I’m going to get 45, Stewie.”
And on went the workout.
“That’s Mike Cammalleri,” said Michigan associate coach Mel Pearson, passing along the story as he heard it from Stewart. “He’s just got confidence in his ability…He doesn’t back away from those challenges.”
He’s drawn to them.
That’s a major reason Cammalleri came to Montreal, where you could put Team Canada in the bleu, blanc et rouge and the Canadians would have a hard time living up to the legend of the Canadiens.
And that’s why he can’t wait for his second season with the Habs, who raised the bar last season with back-to-back, seven-game playoff upsets – first knocking off the Presidents’ Trophy winners, the Washington Capitals, then knocking off the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Cammalleri didn’t get 45 last season. But he was on pace to score 38 goals before he sustained a knee injury, and after finishing with 26 goals in 65 regular season games, he added 13 more in 19 playoff games. Goaltender Jaroslav Halak was the Habs hero for keeping the puck out of the net, but someone had to put the puck in the net to make that stunning run possible.
“It was the most fun I’ve had probably as a hockey player,” Cammalleri said. “That level of competition, that level of play, how good you’ve got to be, how good everybody is, how fast it is, how precise the game is at that level…I really enjoyed it. I really have a lot of fun playing that way.”
This is what he dreamt about as a kid.
When Pearson came to Montreal for Game 6 against the Penguins, Cammalleri told him: “You’re in for a treat.” Cammalleri scored two goals and drew a standing ovation as the Habs won 4-3 and forced Game 7. Afterward, Cammalleri took Pearson on a tour of the dressing room, showing off the plaques of the Stanley Cup-winning teams, pointing out some of the players, marveling that Jean Beliveau himself had been there that night.
“You could tell he was just so (excited about) the tradition of Montreal and hockey,” Pearson said. “Most guys would not want to go to that pressure-packed situation, but I think he thrives on it. He really thrives on the pressure of the competition. You could see that at a young age.”
The Wolverines got to know Cammalleri long before he went to college. His father, Leo, used to drive him from Toronto to Ann Arbor, Mich., for summer hockey camp as early as age 14. Just thinking about it brings a smile to Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Marty Turco, who played at Michigan from 1994-98.
“He’s small now,” said Turco of Cammalleri, who is listed at 5-foot-9. “He was tiny then.”
Cammalleri didn’t let his size get in the way of his big dreams. He had a chip on his shoulder, according to Turco. He declared he would play at Michigan. Sure enough, he played for the Wolverines from 1999-2001. He had skill and vision, but those weren’t the only reasons he had the ability to take over a shift or even an Saints jersey
entire game.
“He has that ‘it,’ ” Pearson said. “You can’t teach it. You can’t acquire it. You just sometimes have it or you don’t, and he has that ‘it.’ That’s what makes him a special player.”
It wasn’t enough in the NHL, at first. Cammalleri split his first two professional seasons between the Los Angeles Kings and AHL’s Manchester Monarchs, then spent 2004-05 with the Monarchs because of the lockout. Even after he proved he could be a point-a-game player in the NHL – 34 goals and 80 points in 81 games with the Kings in 2006-07, and 39 goals and 82 points in 81 games with the Calgary Flames in 2008-09 – something was missing.
The playoffs. Cammalleri never appeared in the playoffs in five seasons with the Kings, and he lasted only six games in his one season with the Flames. After the Habs upset the Caps, teammate Scott Gomez, who won two Cups and went to another final with the New Jersey Devils, teased Cammalleri: “Welcome to the second round.”
The playoffs and the Montreal environment brought out the best in Cammalleri. When the tempo and intensity increased, when the Bell Centre rocked and roared, he became a go-to guy, not just the nice second or third option many considered him to be. When he had chances, he buried them. Cammalleri actually averaged fewer shots per game in the playoffs (3.15) than he did in the regular season (3.35), but his shooting percentage increased to 21.7 from 11.9. Simply put, he morphed into a lethal goal-scorer when it mattered the most.
“It was a lot of fun,” Cammalleri said. “It was emotional. It was exciting. It was a lot of those things. The sentiment now is, ‘It was almost good,’ you know? You put in all that work and you get to the conference final. It would have been nice just to get to the Stanley Cup final.”
The mindset now is not to view last season’s playoffs as some sort of magical, Cinderella run. Yeah, the Habs were the eighth seed in the East. But if you think it was a fluke that they upset the Pens and Caps and the puck just went in for Cammalleri, then you think they were lucky. And if you think they were lucky, that belittles them.
“I’m not much of a believer in luck,” Cammalleri said. “The word luck doesn’t really make much sense to me. I think there’s reasons why things happen. I think it’s just…you work on things. You try to work on them the right way over periods of time, and you’re ready for certain opportunities.”
Cammalleri thinks the Canadiens benefitted from last season’s experience. They had so many new faces, including himself, Gomez, Brian Gionta, Hal Gill, Jaroslav Spacek, Travis Moen, Benoit Pouliot and Tom Pyatt, not to mention P.K. Subban and coach Jacques Martin. They didn’t know each other very well; now, they’ve developed chemistry. They didn’t even have a captain; now, one will be named before the season.
Halak won’t be back, thanks to the controversial trade with the St. Louis Blues, and all of Quebec is concerned the job has been returned to Carey Price. But Cammalleri has his goalie’s back.
“I have so much confidence in Carey Price,” Cammalleri said. “I just think he’s a fantastic, talented goaltender, and I think he really matured a lot as a person last year, the way he handled that situation. I was proud of him, and I just look forward to playing with him this year.”
What can Cammalleri and the Canadiens do for an encore? Cammalleri is smart enough not to say he’s going to score 45 goals and the Canadiens will win the Cup. He said he is not worried about results, only about his teammates shouldering the burden together and becoming a better team.
But make no mistake: This is where Cammalleri wants to be, and he has worked too hard to get here to consider last season anything but a start. The chip on his shoulder is still there.
“That chip isn’t there to be just a good player in this league or to San Diego Chargers jersey
do it one time,” Turco said. “As good an unforeseen playoff run that they had and him being right in the middle of it all – him stepping up and Halak and a few others – I mean, that’s just kind of a taste of it. Those things feed that fire… He wants more of it.”

Va. chiropractor pleads to steroids charges

Steelers jersey
McLEAN, Va. (AP)—A Virginia chiropractor who treated members of the Washington Capitals hockey team pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor steroids charges in Florida.
Douglas Nagel, 50, who had offices in the same Arlington, Va., mall complex as the Capitals’ practice facility, was placed on three years of probation and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service, said Chip Thullbery, spokesman for the Polk County, Fla. State Attorney.
Nagel pleaded guilty to eight counts of attempted possession of cheap nfl jerseys
a controlled substance, a misdemeanor. Nagel’s attorney, Luke Lirot, said the judge withheld formal adjudication of guilt, meaning that Nagel will not be formally convicted of a crime if he successfully completes his probation.
Lirot said the plea and reduced charges were possible because the “ensuing investigation showed that Dr. Nagel had not provided any substances to any sports figures, teams, or any other person, and accepted responsibility for his personal use of the substances from the very beginning of the investigation.”
Capitals players Matt Bradley(notes), Shaone Morrisonn(notes) and Eric Fehr(notes) admitted receiving chiropractic treatment from Nagel but denied getting steroids from him. Nagel denied that he ever distributed steroids and said the drugs he ordered from a Florida supplier were for personal use.
The supplier, Andrew Thomas, had told investigators that Nagel had boasted the steroids were for professional athletes. Thomas was sentenced earlier this year to eight months in federal prison.
Police also expressed skepticism that the quantity of Bills jersey
steroids ordered by Nagel were for personal use.
When Nagel was arrested in March, the NHL and the Capitals said the league had done a thorough investigation and that there was nothing linking the Nagel case to steroid use by any members of the team. But Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said at the time that the NHL was not cooperative in his investigation of the case.
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP)—Defenseman Tom Poti(notes) has signed a two-year, $5.75 million contract extension with the Washington Capitals.
Poti will receive $3 million in the 2011-12 season, and $2.75 million in 2012-13. The $14 million, four-year deal he signed when he joined Washington as a free agent in 2007 was set to expire after the coming season.
The 33-year-old Poti had four goals, 20 assists and 42 penalty minutes in 70 games last season, helping Washington finish with the NHL’s best regular-season record. He ranked fifth among league defensemen with a career-best, plus-26 rating and ranked second on the Capitals with 121 blocked shots.
Poti has 67 goals, 251 assists and 578 penalty minutes in 787 49ers jersey
career NHL games with the Capitals, Edmonton Oilers, and New York’s Rangers and Islanders.
The Capitals also said Tuesday that they have signed free agent goalie Brandon Anderson to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Bruins look for more from winger Lucic

Minnesota Vikings jersey
BOSTON (AP)—If the NHL were college, Milan Lucic(notes) would be a senior.
So just like a student on the brink of graduation, more will be expected from the Boston Bruins winger in this, his fourth year in the league. It’s also the first of a three-year deal worth a reported $4.083 million per season. He signed the contract last spring.
“I feel like I have the ability to help contribute to this team a little bit football jersey
more,” Lucic said on Tuesday after practice at TD Garden. “I still, in my three years, haven’t been able to hit the 20-goal mark and I feel like that’s a realistic goal for me this year and that’s a personal goal that I should be able to meet. In saying that, I shouldn’t just be thinking that way. If I just start thinking goal, goal, goal and just getting points, that’s when my play kind of starts to suffer.
“I think if I’m just moving my feet and playing physical, everything else tends to fall into place. I think after playing now, going into my fourth year, what I want to do is try to be the best player on the ice on a more consistent level. I think that’s a challenge for myself and that’s what I’m looking forward to doing this year.”
Lucic entered the league as a 19-year-old in 2007, scoring eight goals. He increased that total to 17 his second year, but dropped off to nine last season. The major obstacle for Lucic in 2009-10 was the injury bug, which limited him to just 50 games. A broken finger kept him out of 13 games in the fall, and he Chargers jersey
suffered a high ankle sprain Nov. 25 and didn’t return until Jan. 7.
While he played well in spurts, Lucic acknowledged in the spring that he had a tough time learning how much he could push himself when he wasn’t 100 percent. He felt limited in what he could do. After four days of on-ice workouts this training camp, Lucic said he’s feeling better every day.
“I don’t have to tape it anymore, which is a good sign,” he said of his ankle. “I’m not going to lie. I did not like taping it one bit. That was probably the hardest thing to adjust to when I first came back, was the tape. And you’re going to have the restricted movement because you’re locked into that one position. So, like I said, at the end of last year, I felt like I was playing real well in the Philadelphia series and I was skating real well. In that series, I was moving my feet and I was skating real well and I think that’s why I was able to produce offensively.”
Lucic was solid in the playoffs with five goals and four assists in 13 games. Coach Claude Julien is looking for that to carry over.
“I think it definitely slowed him down. I think anyone who has been injured twice, with not minor but major injuries, certainly it takes its toll,” said Julien, whose team lost in the second round to Philadelphia, despite winning the series’ first three games. “So it was a tough year for him. We acknowledge Bears jersey
that. At the same time, it’s kind of an opportunity to redeem himself and bounce back with a good year here. Getting off to a good start is important. I think he trained hard this summer to get into shape, and if he’s scoring goals, that’s a good sign.”
The Bruins open their preseason schedule Wednesday in Montreal and continue Thursday in Rochester, N.Y., against Florida. Lucic figures to get into one of those two games.

Packers RB Nance active, Bills LB Torbor back

Minnesota Vikings jersey

Newly acquired running back Dimitri Nance is active for the Green Bay Packers' game against the Buffalo Bills.
Nance was signed on Tuesday off the Atlanta Falcons' practice squad cheap nfl jerseys
after starting running back Ryan Grant was placed on injured reserve with a right ankle injury that needs surgery.
The Packers were also without starting fullback Korey Hall (hip). Quinn Johnson took his place. Other notables out were cornerback Brandon Underwood (shoulder) and linebacker Desmond Bishop (hamstring).
With Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny out for a few weeks with a sprained right knee, Keith Ellison filled his spot in the starting lineup. Linebacker Reggie Torbor was also in the lineup after missing last week's game with a chest injury.

The Atlanta Falcons are without safety Erik Coleman and running back Beanie Wells is inactive for the Arizona Cardinals for Sunday's game.
Coleman, a starting strong safety, is out with a left knee injury he suffered in last week's loss at Pittsburgh but returned to finish the game. He was listed as questionable.
Second-year safety William Moore made his first start.
The Falcons are without receiver Michael Jenkins (shoulder) for the second straight week. Harry Douglas is making his second straight start.
Wells was held out with a bruised right knee. Tim Hightower is the starting running back.
Early Doucet is inactive with a sports hernia, as announced on Thursday, leaving rookie Stephen Williams as the Cardinals' No. 3 receiver.
Dallas offensive linemen Marc Colombo and Kyle Kosier are active and starting the Cowboys' home opener.
Colombo, the right tackle, and Kosier, the left guard, sustained knee injuries in training camp and Cowboys jersey

Pro Bowl linebacker DeMarcus Ware also starts for Dallas after leaving the season-opening loss at Washington early after taking a shot to the head.
Bears linebacker Nick Roach was inactive for the Bears, but linebacker Lance Briggs started after being bothered by an ankle.

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Percy Harvin is active against Miami after being listed as questionable with a hip injury.
The reigning AP offensive rookie of the year tested out his injured hip early on Sunday and, as expected, was in the lineup. Rookie running back Toby Gerhart was also active for the first time this season after missing the opener with a knee injury.
Cornerbacks Cedric Griffin and Chris Cook were inactive again as they continue to recover from knee injuries.
The Dolphins deactivated outside linebacker Ikaika Alama-Francis because of an illness. He was listed as questionable for the game. Miami is also without defensive lineman Jared Odrick because of a hairline fracture in his right leg and linebacker Channing Crowder, who has a groin injury.
Tennessee defensive end William Hayes is missing a second straight game as the Titans give him one more week to heal his knee by deactivating him against Pittsburgh on Sunday.
The Steelers already had announced left tackle Max Starks (ankle) and nose tackle Casey Hampton (hamstring) would not play. Jonathan Scott will start for Starks with Chris Hoke starting in Hampton's spot. The Steelers also activated defensive tackle Steve McLendon after cutting Byron Leftwich to provide depth on a day with the temperature predicted to reach 90 degrees.
Hayes started 11 games last season. He sprained his right knee during training camp. He practiced Friday and said he would be ready against the Giants if he didn't play against Pittsburgh.
The Carolina Panthers will have quarterback Matt Moore against Tampa Bay, but starting receiver Brandon LaFell, defensive end Tyler Brayton and defensive tackle Louis Leonard are out with injuries.
The Buccaneers will be without running back Kareem Huggins, but tight end Kellen Winslow is active despite a sore right knee.
Moore, who sustained a concussion last week, had one less receiving target. LaFell was Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
sidelined with a hamstring injury, giving Dwayne Jarrett the start. Receiver David Gettis was active for Carolina ahead of fellow rookie Armanti Edwards.
Brayton sat out with a sore ankle, and Leonard was sidelined with an elbow injury. Cornerback Chris Gamble was active despite a sore ankle.

Well-rested Saints look to get on roll

Minnesota Vikings jersey
The New Orleans Saints are going from a prime-time season opener to kick off the NFL season to a second straight game in the national spotlight.
Quarterback Drew Brees doesn't mind all the early season hype surrounding the football jersey
defending Super Bowl champions. They've had plenty of time to prepare for Monday night's matchup at San Francisco following their Sept. 9 win over the Minnesota Vikings, a rematch of last season's NFC championship game.
''Every game is a huge game, especially when you're going from a Thursday night prime-time game to a Monday night prime-time game,'' Brees said.
Running back Reggie Bush makes his first appearance for the Saints since giving back his 2005 Heisman Trophy won while with Southern California. The NCAA punished USC after concluding that Bush and his family took money and gifts from sports agents while Bush played for the Trojans.
Bush's energy is focused on the 49ers.
''They're going to be tough,'' he said. ''It's at their field, home field advantage. The crowd's going to be behind them and anybody who knows Mike Singletary knows how fierce of a competitor he was.''
The Saints sure would appear to have the upper hand against San Francisco. They're already clicking. They've won the last five matchups with the Niners, who will try to get back on track following a dismal 31-6 season-opening loss at Seattle and a week of questions about their offense. Quarterback Alex Smith had problems getting the plays into his ear on time before the headset cut off with 15 seconds on the clock.
Those issues drew criticism of second-year 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye, who stood up Thursday and took the blame for what happened while also defending himself and his NFL coaching career stretching more than three decades.
The Niners didn't score a touchdown against Seattle and couldn't score in the second half. They made the very penalties and mental errors that cost them so many times on the road last season, when San Francisco dropped six straight away from the Bay Area and five in a row by a combined 19 points.
New Orleans isn't too concerned with the 49ers' early season drama.
''I don't know what's going on there in that organization, but I know in our organization everything is good,'' Saints running back Pierre Thomas said. ''We can't take this team for granted.''
Brees, Bush and the Saints seem far ahead of the 49ers at this stage.
Brees completed 27 of 36 passes for 237 yards and a touchdown against the Vikings, hitting nine different receivers. That could cause problems for San Francisco's sometimes overly aggressive secondary.
Winning 14-9 against Minnesota, New Orleans scored its fewest points in Vikings jersey
a victory since coach Sean Payton took over in 2006. That after the Saints began the game with Brees leading a five-play, 77-yard touchdown drive in the opening 2:04.
''He's very efficient. He pretty much knows where he's going with the ball,'' 49ers cornerback Nate Clements said of Brees.
The Saints are trying to begin 2-0 in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history.
Singletary insisted San Francisco will shut down Brees.
The coach has been on the defensive of late, in a far different way than in his Hall of Fame linebacker days with the Bears that Bush alluded to.
Singletary is trying to get the 49ers back to normal. A quiet training camp ended with team captain Vernon Davis getting into it verbally with second-year receiver Michael Crabtree during a practice leading up to the last preseason game. Singletary had to step between them, then took both players to the locker room for a chat. Neither played at all during the team's unbeaten exhibition campaign, and it showed in their timing with Smith against the Seahawks.
The ugly performance in Seattle led to more issues. Singletary dismissed a report by Yahoo! this past week criticizing Raye's playcalling and claiming players approached Singletary with concerns about the offensive coordinator during the offseason.
Singletary was angered by the report and the notion that someone in the building might have gone public.
''To me, that's a rat, that's a coward, so those things I can't spend my time on,'' he said. ''I don't want to deal with a rat. I don't want to spend my time trying to find out who said this, who did that. ... In time, the smell will come.''
Singletary said Saturday he was still deciding whether to bring Raye down to the field from the booth so he could give the plays directly to Smith rather than go through middle man and quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson. Another possibility is Smith wearing a wristband with plays he can go to if the communication problems persist.
Smith believes the issue will be solved by Monday night.
''It's just a more conscious effort from top to bottom, from the moment the play is called coming all the way through the headsets to me - and that's getting in the huddle and being efficient in the huddle and breaking and getting to the line of scrimmage,'' Smith said. ''It's something that we've gotten away with at times in Colts jersey
the past, especially last year, you know, just battling it and hurried at the line of scrimmage and we've gotten away with it at times. But I think over the long run, it hurts you.''
It hurt the 49ers in Week 1 because they never found the end zone despite plenty of chances.
''We need 7 all the time, we don't need to keep getting 3,'' receiver Josh Morgan said. ''That's basically just executing the plays so we can get 7.''

Seymour, Bush, Gallery all out for Raiders

Minnesota Vikings jersey
The Oakland Raiders are without three key injured players for their home opener against the St. Louis Rams.
Defensive tackle Richard Seymour (hamstring), running back Michael Bush nfl jerseys
(left thumb) and offensive lineman Robert Gallery (hamstring) all are on the inactive list for Sunday's game.
The other inactive players for the Raiders are linebacker Travis Goethel, defensive backs Walter McFadden and Hiram Eugene and receiver Chaz Schilens. Kyle Boller is the third quarterback.
The Raiders also cut offensive lineman Erik Pears and activated safety Stevie Brown from the practice squad.
The inactive players for the Rams are linebacker Chris Chamberlain; tight Buffalo Bills jersey
ends Michael Hoomanawanui and Fendi Onobun; defensive backs Kevin Dockery and Justin King; offensive lineman John Greco; defensive lineman Clifton Ryan; and receiver Brandon Gibson.
The Detroit Lions got a break from the rule book after it cost them a win over Chicago.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick lofted a third-down pass that DeSean Jackson caught in the first quarter of Sunday's game. Jackson didn't hold onto the football as he landed on the ground with cornerback Jonathan Wade.
Detroit coach Jim Schwartz lividly protested the call and fired the challenge flag onto the field.
Referee Clete Blakeman announced the call Steelers jersey
was being overturned because Jackson lost control of the football.
Lions receiver Calvin Johnson leaped for a catch at Chicago in Week 1, had his feet and a knee in the end zone before letting the football go after it hit the turf. It was ruled incomplete because he didn't maintain possession.

Ferguson brings back Berbatov for his top fixture

Minnesota Vikings jersey
MANCHESTER, England, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov will return to face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday after Alex Ferguson’s “calculated risk” to rest him and other in-form players backfired.
United made 10 changes from the side that drew 3-3 at Everton last cheap nfl jerseys
weekend for Tuesday’s Champions League match at home to Rangers and paid the price when they were held 0-0.
Berbatov, who has scored three goals in four league matches this season, will be part of what Ferguson sees as the biggest drawcard on the English fixture list.
“He’s expressed himself this season very well, he’s enjoying his football and he’ll play on Sunday,” Ferguson told reporters on Friday.
“We took a calculated risk in terms of squad … and we still had enough big players to get a result (against Rangers).”
Rio Ferdinand could be the only player to keep his place in the back four, with John O’Shea, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic likely to return after they were rested.
Midfielder Paul Scholes is also expected to start, goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar should be back and Antonio Valencia’s long-term absence could give Nani a start on the right wing.
“I may sound like a parrot sometimes because I say this time Indianapolis Colts jersey
and time again but this is THE fixture,” said Ferguson.
The United-Liverpool derby has often produced pre-match barbs, particularly when Rafa Benitez was at the helm at the Merseyside club, and Ferguson could not resist a little dig.
“It’s a different game,” he said, comparing it to the Rangers match where his side were stifled in attack.
“I don’t think Liverpool will play five at the back. Maybe six!”
BIGGEST NAMES
Liverpool had more joy than United in resting some of their biggest names for their European match this week, a 4-1 victory over Steaua Bucharest in the Europa League, and manager Roy Hodgson said they needed the break before Sunday’s game.
Captain Steven Gerrard should be back and Fernando Torres, who has scored in his last three games against United, is looking for the match that will kickstart a poor season so far.
“He’s Fernando Torres, the fact is he’s going to have bad games, he’s going to have wonder games,” Hodgson told a new conference. “Good players remain good players.”
Liverpool fans could enjoy the chance to jeer United striker Wayne Dallas Cowboys jersey
Rooney, who is expected to be back for his first league match since being left out of the squad to face Everton to avoid abuse from fans over media speculation over his marriage.
Hodgson hopes boos do not act as motivation for Rooney.
“I understand the concern but I can only deal with things that are in my grasp,” he said. “Fans winding opponents up and that working against you is certainly out of my control so I’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

Spain roundup-Defender Ramos fit for Real Madrid

Minnesota Vikings jersey
MADRID, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Brief news from La Liga ahead of this weekend’s matches (all times GMT):
* Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has Sergio Ramos back in his squad for football jersey
Saturday’s match at promoted Real Sociedad (2000) after the Spain defender shook off a muscle problem that kept him out of midweek Champions League action.
Midfielders Kaka (knee) and Fernando Gago (knee) and defenders Raul Albiol (ankle) and Ezequiel Garay (knee) are still unavailable due to injury
Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso will not be doing any favours for Sociedad, where he played from 1996-2000, although he said he was looking forward to returning to his hometown club.
“There will be three points up for grabs and for the 90 minutes we’ll be opponents even though I always have been, and will be, for Real Sociedad,” Alonso said. “Going home is always nice and they have always received me very well.”
* Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has a full squad available for Sunday’s Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
trip to leaders Atletico Madrid (1700) apart from injured striker Jeffren, the champions said on their website (www.fcbarcelona.com).
Barca are looking to get their campaign back on track after slipping up against promoted Hercules last weekend, although Atletico were the only team to beat them last season.
Atletico’s Argentina striker Sergio Aguero is racing to be fit after injuring his ankle in last weekend’s 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao.
The Atletico players must not allow Thursday’s 1-0 Europa League defeat at Aris Salonika to affect them, according to captain Antonio Lopez.
“They are two completely different competitions and we have to be focused and with our minds on the Barca match,” he told reporters.
* Sevilla and Spain winger Jesus Navas will be out for 10 to 15 days after suffering ligament damage in Thursday’s 1-0 Europa League defeat by Paris St Germain, the club said on their website (www.sevillafc.es).
Brazil striker Luis Fabiano and French defender Abdoulay Konko picked up minor injuries and are doubtful for Sunday’s match at Malaga (1900).
* New Hercules striker David Trezeguet said he understood the importance of Sunday’s match at home to neighbours Valencia (1500).
“I know the emotion this match generates among the Hercules Minnesota Vikings jersey
fans,” the France World Cup winner, who joined from Juventus in the close season, told the sports daily As.
Trezeguet also hoped his switch to La Liga would give him more playing time and help his bid to get back in the France squad.

Ligue 1 roundup-OM lose Lucho for Arles game

Minnesota Vikings jersey
PARIS, Sept 17 (Reuters) - Brief news from Ligue 1 before this weekend’s matches (times GMT):
* Olympique Marseille will be without playmaker Lucho Gonzalez when nfl jerseys
they travel to bottom club Arles-Avignon on Saturday (1900) after the Argentine suffered a calf injury in his team’s 1-0 Champions League defeat by Spartak Moscow.
“Lucho will not play against Arles-Avignon on Saturday,” Marseille’s medical staff said in a statement on the club’s website (www.om.net).
Champions Marseille got off to a stuttering start to the season, picking only five points from their opening five games.
Arles-Avignon reserve team coach Jean-Louis Saez will be in charge Colts jersey
for the game after they announced they were set to fire head coach Michel Estevan.
* Monaco could be without Daniel Niculae when leaders Toulouse visit on Saturday (1700) after the Romanian picked up a groin injury last weekend. Monaco, ninth in the standings, trail Toulouse by five points.
* Second-placed Stade Rennes expect to welcome back France defender Rod Fanni for their trip to Paris St Germain on Sunday (1500).
“Rod Fanni, who was suffering from a thigh injury, is back in training,” the Brittany side said on their website earlier this week (www.staderennais.fr)
* France defender Aly Cissokho (thigh) has resumed training and is expected to be fit for Olympique Lyon’s trip to Girondins Bordeaux on Sunday (1900), the club reported on their website (www.olweb.fr).
Lyon playmaker Yoann Gourcuff is doubtful for a return to his former Cowboys jersey
club with an unspecified injury.
“He took a knock. He is doubtful,” coach Claude Puel told reporters without elaborating

Manning Matchup II: Peyton vs. Eli

Cowboys jersey
As if Peyton Manning(notes) doesn’t dominate the TV screen enough, the hype meter will explode heading into Sunday’s matchup between his Indianapolis Colts and little brother Eli’s New York Giants.
We wonder if any of Peyton’s multitude of cheap nfl jerseys
sponsors came up with a new advertisement about brotherly love, sibling rivalries and dad Archie’s mixed emotions.
On the field, the Colts are 0-1 after a distressingly mediocre performance in Houston, a rival they had beaten in 15 of the previous 16 meetings. Considering that the Colts won their first 14 games last season and might have gone unbeaten had coach Jim Caldwell not sat down Manning and his other regulars for much of the final two matches, well, this sure is a new season.
If the Colts are to repeat their AFC title of 2009, they must find a way to stop the run. The Giants rushed for 118 yards against Carolina in winning their opener, a mere 113 yards short of what Arian Foster(notes) put on Indy in Houston.
So the Manning Matchup might not be as significant as whether Brandon Jacobs(notes) and Ahmad Bradshaw(notes) can run through, around and over what seemed like an overmatched Colts defense that again is without star safety Bob Sanders(notes) (torn right biceps).
Then again, the four-time MVP and his kid brother might light up the scoreboard with their arms and their superb group of receivers.
Can’t imagine the 5 1/2 -point favorite Colts starting 0-2 …
COLTS, 28-24
Arizona (plus 7) at Atlanta
The Cardinals have all kinds of issues, particularly at quarterback, and were fortunate to beat the Rams. Atlanta couldn’t find the end zone against Pittsburgh. Arizona’s D doesn’t resemble the Steelers’ unit.
BEST BET: FALCONS, 24-13
Miami (plus 6) at Minnesota
Do the Vikings have a deep passing game without Sidney Rice(notes)? Didn’t appear so in the loss to New Orleans and that could hurt here.
UPSET SPECIAL: DOLPHINS, 21-20
Baltimore (minus 1) at Cincinnati
Tough assignment to come off emotional upset win on a Monday night and then travel, even if you are as talented as the Ravens. Bengals are angry with their opening stinker.
BENGALS, 13-10
Kansas City (plus 3) at Cleveland
Tough assignment to come off emotional, divisional upset win on Indianapolis Colts jersey
a Monday night and then travel, even when the Browns are the host.
BROWNS, 14-13
New England (minus 1 1/2 ) at New York Jets
Tough assignment for the Jets no matter where or when they play the Patriots. Randy Moss(notes) wants to deliver an on-field message to Darrelle Revis(notes) in this bad-blood rivalry.
PATRIOTS, 17-7
Buffalo (plus 12) at Green Bay
Packers are down to one true tailback with any kind of experience, Brandon Jackson(notes). So let ‘er fly, Aaron Rodgers(notes), albeit against a good secondary.
PACKERS, 30-13
Pittsburgh (plus 4 1/2 ) at Tennessee
Titans showed plenty against Oakland as Chris Johnson began his chase of 2,500 yards rushing and the defense displayed strength against the run and the pass. Pittsburgh barely survived in OT at home against Atlanta and must show more on offense.
TITANS, 16-13
Philadelphia (minus 3 1/2 ) at Detroit
Maybe this week Calvin Johnson(notes) will complete the catch before he rushes off to celebrate a touchdown.
EAGLES 21-13
Chicago (plus 8 1/2 ) at Dallas
Chicago got the last-minute call it needed to beat Detroit. Dallas didn’t get the call it needed at Washington. Big change this weekend as Cowboys get on track.
COWBOYS, 28-17
New Orleans (minus 4 1/2 ) at San Francisco (Monday night)
Niners were duds in Seattle and now they get Super Bowl champions, who showed more defense than expected against Minnesota. San Francisco needs to find its running game now.
SAINTS, 24-14
St. Louis (plus 6) at Oakland
Sam Bradford(notes) will not throw 55 times this week. Steven Jackson might run 55 times, though.
RAMS, 12-10
Seattle (plus 3) at Denver
An early measure if the Seahawks really are that good. There sure won’t be a lack of enthusiasm on either sideline from the head coaches.
BRONCOS, 16-14
Houston (minus 2) at Washington
A good early measure if the Texans really are that good and how much difference Mike Shanahan is making in D.C.
TEXANS, 23-14
Jacksonville (plus 8) at San Diego
Slow starts are the norm for the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Chargers, but they have no excuses if they fall to Jacksonville, which rarely makes the trip cross country.
CHARGERS, 24-13
Tampa Bay (off) at Carolina
Panthers QB Matt Moore’s(notes) uncertainty with a concussion eliminates a betting line. Carolina will rely on its running game, which didn’t do much against the Giants.

Dolphins’ Ricky Williams predicts no lockout

Cowboys jersey
DAVIE, Fla. (AP)—The running back who once staged a walkout predicts there will be no lockout.
Ricky Williams(notes) has been known to miss football jersey
a season from time to time, but he expects to be playing in 2011. The Dolphins’ running back is also their new player representative, and he’s optimistic the NFL Players Association and the league will reach a collective bargaining agreement without a labor stoppage.
“Personally, I have a positive outlook,” Williams said Wednesday. “I think that we’re going to come to an agreement. At least I hope that there’s not going to be a lockout. I believe that we’re being reasonable, and there are certain things that are important to us and we’re going to fight for. But I think when it comes down to it, there’s going to be an agreement reached.”
Williams made his comments in a conference call with Minnesota media. The Dolphins play the Vikings on Sunday.
Given his independent streak, the 33-year-old Minnesota Vikings jersey
Williams might seem a curious choice as a spokesman for union solidarity. He abruptly retired before the 2004 season, and in the wake of repeated violations of the league’s drug policy, he missed all but one game in 2006-07.
But his history with the Dolphins goes back eight years, longer than any other player on the roster, and Chad Pennington(notes) is the team’s only older player.
Williams became the player representative when he replaced Greg Camarillo(notes), who was traded last month to Minnesota. Camarillo said Williams needs no advice on how to do the job.
“He has been around forever and seen everything, so he’s got that handled,” Camarillo said. “I was asking him for tips when I was the rep and he was the alternate.”
As a gesture of union solidarity, the Dolphins and Bills jointly raised their index fingers before Sunday’s game in Buffalo. The ritual was repeated at several other season openers.
“It’s a wonderful thing,” Williams said. “It’s not only the players. Ideally we’d have people in the stands doing it, people that work in the stadium. Because if there’s a lockout initiated by the owners, it’s not only going to be us that suffer, it’s going to be the people that work for the stadium, it’s going to be the fans, it’s going to be the hotels, it’s going to be the economies of these cities.
“So it’s not just about us. It’s about pushing to have some kind of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
an agreement reached.”

Former Liverpool star slams 'diabolical' Torres

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres has been branded "diabolical" and accused of lacking the desire to perform at the top level by former Anfield hero Jamie Redknapp.
Torres, who has struggled for form since suffering an adductor injury last season, looked off the nfl jerseys
pace during Liverpool's 0-0 draw with Birmingham at St Andrews and struggled to make an impact against centre-backs Roger Johnson and Scott Dann.
The Spain international has been widely criticised since the World Cup and Redknapp is the latest expert to lay into Torres.
"Fans will suffer to a certain extent when you give the ball away, but they won't suffer a lack of effort," Redknapp said. "Out there for 45 minutes today he (Torres) has been terrible. He hasn't got hold of the ball, he hasn't chased, he's got frustrated, he could have been booked, he's been diabolical.
"I'm his biggest fan, and of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
course you have to give Johnson and Dann credit, but he's shown no appetite for the game. He's looked frustrated, sloppy, lethargic. I know people talk about his rustiness, but he looked fed-up."
Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson leapt to the defence of Torres - who scored the winner against West Bromwich Albion last month with his only goal of the season - and insisted the striker will get "better and better."
"Fernando came into the centre on a few occasions and, when he did that, he caused havoc," Hodgson said. "You've got to give the back four of Birmingham credit. They worked very hard to contain him and pressurise him.
"But he is looking much fitter with every game and I thought he looked dangerous and I thought, the longer the game went, the stronger he became. I think he is working hard for the team. He is a constant thorn in the side of Dallas Cowboys jersey
defenders.
"We know he lacks match training. He missed matches at the end of last year and during the World Cup. But I'm not at all concerned about Fernando Torres. He will get better and better."

Fergie has no regrets as he recalls Rooney

Dallas Cowboys jersey
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has no regrets about leaving Wayne Rooney out of his team to face Everton and has recalled the striker for Tuesday night's Champions League match against Rangers.
Rooney was surprisingly omitted from the squad for Saturday's 3-3 draw at Goodison following a week of nfl jersey
being splashed across the newspapers because of lurid allegations regarding his private life.
Ferguson claimed he wanted to spare Rooney from "terrible abuse" against his former club but Everton manager David Moyes believes United wanted to make an example of the 24-year-old.
However, Ferguson has maintained his decision was based on protecting his star striker and is happy he made the right decision, despite failing to take three points.
Ferguson: "I left him out for the reasons I told you on Saturday and I am not going beyond that. I told you what the reasons were for why he was left out and I am not entertaining any of Minnesota Vikings jersey
that nonsense [about punishment].
"No regrets. I did the right thing." Ferguson added. "And I have no concerns about playing him tomorrow at all. I don't know if tomorrow will inspire him. He has a lot of experience behind him. But I do know scoring for England last week will have given him a boost.''
Although Ferguson seems to be standing by the striker publicly, Moyes believes his fellow Scot is privately furious and sent out a message that no one is bigger than the club by dropping the England international at the weekend.
Rooney has been a figure of hate at Everton ever since he left to join United in a £25 million deal in 2004 but has never been spared the vitriol of the Toffees' fans before.
And Moyes offered a hint about the mindset of Indianapolis Colts jersey
fellow manager Ferguson. "I don't think you should put it all on the crowd," said the Everton manager.
"The manager there knows what he's doing and I'm sure he did what he thought was right. Maybe he was just making sure everybody realises that if you play for Manchester United you have to conduct yourself in a certain manner."

Downing backs Houllier to succeed at Aston Villa

Dallas Cowboys jersey

Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing believes Gerard Houllier has all the credentials to bring success to Villa Park and continue his impressive track record in management.
Houllier will not be in charge for Monday night's Premier League clash with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium as he ties up the loose ends with the French Football Federation. He resigned as their technical director last week and under French law Houllier could be forced to serve three months' nfl throwback jerseys
notice, but that's highly unlikely.
The Frenchman is yet to meet the Villa players because of the impasse and will have to wait until 26 September to take charge of his first league game at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
However, Downing is happy with the appointment, although he has also acknowledged the work done by Kevin MacDonald, the man who was overlooked for the role and who will resume caretaker duties against Stoke.
Downing said: "If you look at his past record as a manager, with what he did at Liverpool and at Lyon, he's obviously got a good record and you don't get jobs like that if you're not very good. There's no reason that I can think of why he can't do very well at Aston Villa.
"He's got a good squad of players to work with. It's a great club, great facilities so everything's in place for him to Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
do very well. I'm sure he's excited to come and work with the squad because, if he looks at it, he's got some very good players on his hands here."
Downing will be out to impress Houllier but knows players who did not feature regularly under Martin O'Neill will also be keen to make their mark.
He said: "Personally I see it as a challenge because every time a new manager comes in you've got to impress him. But all those lads who have not played can see it as a fresh start and the young lads coming through can see it as a chance to impress the manager.
"The main thing is we've got to play our best football and stay in the team and that doesn't change really - no matter who is in charge."
Downing believes Villa should go to Stoke full of confidence after showing plenty of resilience in overcoming Everton a fortnight ago.
He said: "That was a good confidence boost for us especially as it came straight after the Newcastle result (lost 6-0). We showed another side to our team. We're not just a flair team. We had to do that. Everton are a good team and they enjoyed a lot of possession. We were desperate to get something out of Indianapolis Colts jersey
the game and it ended up being a really good result for us.
"Stoke have signed some good players in the transfer window so the game may turn out to be a bit different. But we should have a bit of confidence now. If we can beat a good team like Everton, we'll be going there to win the game."

Great Scots reunite in Battle of Britain

Steelers jersey

In a fitting finale for one of the most successful Scottish managers in the domestic game, Rangers boss Walter Smith will make his final push for European glory against a true great and close friend.
Smith will bring the curtain down on football jersey
a trophy-laden Ibrox career at the end of the season and it's a campaign destined for several twists and turns. Rangers kick-off their Champions League charge against Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United at Old Trafford on Tuesday, with old Spanish foes Valencia and Turkish debutants Bursaspor also looking to progress from Group C.
Smith and Ferguson go way back, with the former twice serving as right-hand man to the Govan Godfather with United and with Scotland at the World Cup finals in Mexico.
Their latest reunion, and the return to Manchester for Rangers, has certainly captured the imagination of fans on both sides of the border. It's the first visit back to the 'Rainy City' in the North West of England for the Gers since the UEFA Cup final two years ago when their 2-0 defeat to Zenit St Petersburg at Eastlands was overshadowed by serious crowd disorder.
The travelling support will come under as much scrutiny (if not more) than their team next week. However, for the majority of the masses, this clash is more about what happens on the pitch than off it.
Certainly the battle on the touchline between two of the most respected managers Scotland has ever produced will almost in itself provide an interesting enough spectacle. Smith and Ferguson are clearly fully paid up members of the mutual appreciation society, with the compliments already flying north and south long before the first 'Battle of Britain' whistle.
Fergie has certainly never held back in his praise for Smith. "There are few people in the game with Walter's experience, knowledge and technical ability," he said. "Walter has gone on to prove himself as one of the best managers in Scottish history.
"The number of trophies he has won tells you that. The most important thing is that Walter has always kept his feet on the ground. He has always had a great love of the game and never lost that. These are the qualities that you need to be successful.
"Walter's already been on the phone, talking about tickets for Old Trafford. Like me, he's really looking forward to our games against each other."
Smith is well aware of the size of Minnesota Vikings jersey
the European challenge he faces in his last season at the helm of the club. The former Scotland and Everton boss is so often subdued when he talks about his forthcoming encounters, but he let his guard slip a little as he looked ahead to the prospect of going head to head with his long-time mentor.
"It's a great game to kick off the campaign with and there's no question we couldn't have had a tougher one," he said. "But any footballer worth his salt would want to go and play at Old Trafford, so it is a game we will look forward to.
"United have a supreme pedigree when it comes to the Champions League and it is not often that they don't make it to the late stages. They have become so adept at picking up the points they need to make it through the group stage and that is what we have to look at. They achieve a great level of consistency in Europe, but we know all about them and it will be a challenge we look forward to."
Ferguson will no doubt savour another return to his home city of Glasgow in the second leg, in what has become a familiar journey north in recent times - this is the fourth time in the last seven years that United have been paired with the SPL title holders in the Champions League group stage.
Following their clashes with Rangers under Alex McLeish in 2003-04, Ferguson's side faced Gordon Strachan's Celtic in 2006-07 and 2008-09. Fergie will once again get the opportunity to revisit old haunts in Govan while his loyal band of followers from his adopted city of Aberdeen will no doubt make the 150-mile journey south for the fixture.
But first, Old Trafford awaits and, for Rangers, their main task will be to improve on last season's early Champions League form when they took just one point from their first three matches and conceded nine goals against Stuttgart, Sevilla and Unirea Urziceni. Progression from the group stages is the Indianapolis Colts jersey
ultimate goal.
United will, on the other hand, be looking to put their hands on the trophy again for the first time since 2007-08 and, while the two clubs may be linked for now by an unwavering friendship between their two bosses, the gulf in class widens by the year.

Ravens expect Cousins to play, Webb a game-time decison

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

OWINGS MILLS, Md.—Baltimore Ravens offensive tackle Oniel Cousins(notes) is expected to play after participating fully in practice all week after suffering a concussion last month.
"I don't believe Oniel is touch-and-go," Ravens nfl jerseys
coach John Harbaugh said today. "I would expect him to play. I don't know that I would speak for the doctors, but it looks to me like he's ready to play."
And cornerback Lardarius Webb(notes) (knee) and Minnesota Vikings jersey
defensive end Paul Kruger(notes) (sprained shoulder) are being characterized as game-time decisions.
"I would say this, he's practiced 100 percent the whole week," Harbaugh said of Dallas Cowboys jersey
Webb, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee last Dec. 20 against the Chicago Bears. "We didn't rule it out and we haven't said he was going to go."
Cousins didn't play any preseason games since being carted off the field Aug. 18 during training camp in Westminster. However, he returned to practice this week and participated fully.

Chiefs’ Johnson back in Haley’s good graces

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

Here are some of the whispers we've been hearing around the AFC West:
• We're told that a more consistent training camp and preseason is the reason Chiefs ILB Derrick Johnson won a starting job after coming off the bench for nearly all of 2009. Johnson, who was in head coach Todd Haley's doghouse for much of cheap nfl jerseys
last year, wrested the spot away from Demorrio Williams(notes), who was none too happy about his demotion after he had put together a stellar preseason.
• The Chargers added some much-needed depth at offensive tackle prior to Week One by bringing in veteran OT Adam Terry(notes), who was signed and then cut by the Colts this past offseason. Missing all of 2009 following knee surgery, Terry will back up both Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
tackle spots initially, but we're told that he could be elevated to the starting lineup if either Brandyn Dombrowski(notes) or Jeromey Clary(notes) falters.
• The Raiders had free-agent DE Bobby McCray(notes), who was cut by the Saints earlier this month, in for a workout Sept. 8, but the team is in no rush to sign him. Oakland could consider locking up McCray at some point if a roster spot opens up because of Dallas Cowboys jersey
an injury to a defensive end.

Larry Fitzgerald concerned about chemistry with Derek Anderson

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

Larry Fitzgerald(notes) has concerned about the quarterback situation in Arizona.
No, he’s not upset that Matt Leinart(notes) has departed. It’s having to deal with playing without Kurt Warner(notes) that is the issue. Derek Anderson(notes) will be the starting quarterback this season and because Fitzgerald missed nearly the entire preseason with football jersey
a sprained knee, they haven’t spent a lot of time working together.
“I would have loved to have taken every single snap if I could with the quarterback I'm going to be catching passes from on Sunday," Fitzgerald told Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic. "You want to get that continuity and that cohesiveness down Minnesota Vikings jersey
with that person. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to do that yet.
"But I've been in the league for seven years and I know where I need to be. He's been in the league six years. I think with that experience, it will be OK. But the more we get to work together, the better we're going to be."
But Fitzgerald had a real connection with Warner and Anderson was a castoff in Cleveland.
“Those kinds of things can sidetrack you and I never let any of Indianapolis Colts jersey
those things seep into my mind," Anderson said. "Things are different, yeah. But I'm going to survive. I'm still going to go out there and do my job. I'm not the first guy that's had to deal with it. I won't be the last."

Padres’ Hairston Jr. optimistic after throwing

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Padres infielder Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes) threw for the first time since going on the disabled list and said he’s optimistic about getting back on the field.
Hairston was pleased after making 30-40 nfl jersey
throws at about 80 percent velocity.
“I wouldn’t be smiling, believe me,” Hairston said. “I can’t hide my emotions. If I didn’t feel good, I’d probably be sulking somewhere right now. It felt pretty good. I’m a little bit shocked, to be honest with you, but it’s a good thing.
“When you’re young, you heal fast, right?” the 34-year-old joked.
He’s eligible to be activated on Sunday.
A key contributor for the NL West-leading Padres, Hairston Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
has been on the DL with a sprained right elbow since Aug. 28. Thursday was the first time he picked up a ball since going on the DL.
“I’ve never had arm problems before in my life, and I’ve been throwing since I was probably 2 years old,” he said. “To have this issue come up, I was a little bit surprised. But I guess when you play a long time, not just up in the big leagues, but when you’ve been Minnesota Vikings jersey
playing since Little League, high school, whatever, sometimes the unusual arises. I’m hoping it’s past me and we’ll be careful with it and hopeful I’ll be ready to go.”
Hairston filled in at shortstop while Everth Cabrera(notes) was on the DL twice, and at second base when David Eckstein(notes) was hurt.
Hairston is hitting .249 with 10 homers and 50 RBIs.

Thanks to a gutsy play, the Colorado Rockies are still the hottest team in baseball. A three-game series with the last-place Arizona Diamondbacks may keep them rolling.
With a series against the NL West leader looming, the Rockies look to extend their winning streak to eight games when they host the Diamondbacks on Friday night.
Colorado (76-64) has won a 14 of nfl jerseys
16 and a season-high seven in a row after sweeping a four-game set from Central-leading Cincinnati. The Rockies capped the sweep with a 6-5 victory Thursday, as Chris Nelson(notes) scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning by stealing home while pitcher Nick Masset(notes) became confused before attempting a late throw.
It was the rookie third baseman’s first career stolen base in seven games.
“He was just looking right at the ground,” Nelson said. “He wasn’t paying me any attention. (Third baseman Scott) Rolen was playing back. So I just decided I should just go ahead and go. I didn’t stop.”
That decision has the Rockies in position for their first eight-game winning streak since Sept. 4-11 of last year, a surge that helped them claim the wild card.
Colorado might be in position to overtake the West-leading Padres next week, with the division rivals set to open a three-game series Monday at Coors Field.
The Rockies have won 16 of 20 at home, giving them a 47-22 record to rank second in the majors to Atlanta’s 49-20 mark at Turner Field.
Colorado has taken eight of 10 meetings with Arizona (57-83) at Denver, sweeping the last series there May 25-27.
Carlos Gonzalez(notes) has pounded the Diamondbacks in the Dallas Cowboys jersey
last 10 home games, hitting .529 with six homers and 13 RBIs. The left fielder went 0 for 4 Thursday, ending his career-high 16-game hitting streak.
It was a rare quiet game for Gonzalez, who leads the NL in batting (.337) and ranks among the leaders in homers (32) and RBIs (100) as he makes a run at the Triple Crown.
Jorge De La Rosa(notes) (6-4, 4.18 ERA) will take the mound Friday looking to continue his own strong stretch. The left-hander is 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in his last three starts with all of them resulting in Rockies wins.
He was superb Sunday, allowing two runs in six innings of a 4-2 win at San Diego.
De La Rosa has a 0.90 ERA while winning three consecutive starts against the Diamondbacks.
Although Arizona has been eliminated from playoff contention, interim manager Kirk Gibson may be looking at the remaining 22 games as a chance to stake a claim to the full-time position.
“I certainly want to be back,” Gibson told the team’s official website. “And I certainly feel I can help take the organization where they need to go.”
The Diamondbacks found some success in their role as spoiler Wednesday, beating San Francisco 3-1 to end a four-game slide.
Gibson gives the ball to Joe Saunders(notes) (8-14, 4.56), who is Minnesota Vikings jersey
1-0 with a 2.40 ERA in his last two starts after losing his four previous games with a 7.77 ERA.
The left-hander is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two starts against the Rockies, limiting Gonzalez to one hit in six at-bats.

“We’ve got to play well, no doubt,”

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

The New York Yankees will play 15 of their final 22 games on the road. Perhaps the most important stretch is their nine-game road trip that begins Friday.
The Yankees open the trip with a potential playoff preview against the AL West-leading Texas Rangers.
New York (87-53), which enters this three-game series with a nfl jersey
2 1/2-game lead over Tampa Bay in the AL East, will visit the Rays beginning Monday. First, the Yankees will take on the Rangers (77-63), who have a 7 1/2-game advantage over Oakland atop the West. New York has won four of five in the season series, and is 16-5 at Texas over the past six seasons.
The Yankees went 7-3 on their just-completed homestand, but narrowly avoided a three-game sweep by last-place Baltimore on Wednesday, winning 3-2 on Nick Swisher’s(notes) two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth.
“We’ve got to play well, no doubt,” Swisher told the Yankees’ official website about the upcoming road trip. “We’ve got two great teams we’re coming up on, Texas and Tampa Bay, (and then) Baltimore, who obviously has been playing amazing lately. We’ve got our work cut out for us.”?
Javier Vazquez(notes) (10-9, 5.01 ERA) will open the series for the Yankees, looking to avoid a repeat of his most recent start in Arlington, which played a part in his demotion to the bullpen.
The right-hander was dropped from the rotation after going 2-2 with a 6.69 ERA from July 21-Aug. 21, which included an Aug. 11 start against the Rangers in which he gave up six runs in 4 1-3 innings.
Vazquez rejoined the rotation last weekend but struggled against Toronto on Saturday, allowing five runs, four walks and two home runs in 4 2-3 innings of an eventual 7-5 win.
“He did OK,” manager Joe Girardi said. “My plan is for him to stay Indianapolis Colts jersey
in the rotation. I can’t tell you what’s going to happen. There are no guarantees in this game.”
The Rangers return home after salvaging a 4-6 road trip with back-to-back wins over Toronto, including a 4-2 victory Thursday. Mitch Moreland(notes) drove in three runs and Colby Lewis(notes) won for the first time since July 16.
“Things just went bad for us there for a minute but we were able to right the ship,” manager Ron Washington said. “That’s what it’s all about.”?
While Josh Hamilton(notes) missed his fifth straight game with bruised ribs and is unlikely to play Friday, Texas does expect Elvis Andrus(notes) to play for the first time since last Saturday. The shortstop, who is hitting .276, has been out with a sore right hamstring.
Texas, which has fallen behind Minnesota for home-field advantage in the first-round of the playoffs, has dropped three of four at home after winning 11 of its previous 15 in Arlington.
Rangers starter C.J. Wilson(notes) (14-6, 3.10) looks to bounce back from his first loss in nearly two months.
Wilson had been 7-0 with a 1.99 ERA since July 18, but gave up Minnesota Vikings jersey
six runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-5 loss to Minnesota on Sunday. He walked four and hit a batter.
The left-hander is 0-1 with a 3.97 ERA in two starts against the Yankees this season.

Mexico edges Colombia 1-0 on late goal

Colts jersey

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP)—Elias Hernandez scored in the 89th minute, lifting Mexico over Colombia 1-0 Tuesday night in an otherwise a lackluster exhibition.
Hernandez scored from 15 yards to give El Tri its football jerseys
first victory in three matches since the World Cup.
Mexico played a 1-1 tie last month with World Cup champion Spain under interim coach Enrique Meza. Efrain Flores coached El Tri in Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Ecuador and Tuesday’s victory. Neither is a candidate to replace Javier Aguirre, who resigned after Mexico was eliminated by Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Argentina in the second round of the World Cup.

WCup flop France finally wins in Euro qualifying

Colts jersey

France’s recovery from a humiliating World Cup finally began with a first win in European Championship qualifying on Tuesday night, while Germany and the Netherlands earned their second straight victories.
The French had begun with a surprising loss in nfl jerseys
Group D to Belarus on Friday, but Karim Benzema and Florent Malouda led them to a 2-0 victory at Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Italy and England also put miserable World Cup campaigns behind them by making it two wins out of two on the path to Euro 2012.
Following Sunday tabloid stories alleging he cheated on his pregnant wife last year with a prostitute, Wayne Rooney ended his yearlong goal drought for England in a 3-1 victory over Switzerland.
Italy cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Faeroe Islands, Miroslav Klose’s two goals helped Germany beat Azerbaijan 6-1, and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice for the Netherlands in a 2-1 victory over Finland.
Spain was beaten for the first time since winning the World Cup, allowing its most goals in a decade it a 4-1 exhibition loss at Argentina.
Spain trailed 3-0 down by halftime after goals by Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Carlos Tevez.
Sergio Aguero added Argentina’s fourth in second-half injury time after Fernando Llorente scored for Spain. Interim coach Sergio Batista won his second game since replacing Diego Maradona.
Having lost its previous four games, France had little margin for error in Bosnia. But it took until the 72nd minute for Benzema, who had recovered from a sore ankle, to put the visitors ahead with a left-footed shot after turning a defender.
Malouda doubled the lead six minutes later to give Laurent Blanc his first win since taking over from coach Raymond Domenech after the first-round exit in South Africa.
“This match summarized all the good things I saw during our preparations but that we failed to put in place against Belarus,” Blanc said. “It could be the start of something good.”
France is third in Group D behind Albania and Belarus, which both have four points. Hamdi Salihi’s goal led Albania to a 1-0 win over Luxembourg, while Belarus was held 0-0 by Romania.
Italy looked a shadow of the side that struggled to beat Estonia 2-1 on Friday.
At his home ground, Fiorentina’s Alberto Gilardino headed Italy ahead after 11 minutes against the Faeroe Islands after 11 minutes.
Daniele De Rossi and Antonio Cassano added further goals before halftime, while substitute Fabio Quagliarella scored from close range in the 81st and Pirlo completed the rout in the 90th.
Italy has a two-point lead in Group C over Serbia, which was held to a 1-1 draw by Slovenia.
New Jersey-born Giuseppi Rossi at forward started for Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Italy, while Neven Subotic, a defender from Salt Lake City, started for Serbia in a 1-1 tie against Slovenia.
Former Real Salt Lake forward Yura Movsisyan scored his first international goal, helping Armenia gain a 2-2 tie at Macedonia. A 23-year-old who holds a U.S green card, Movsisyan potentially was eligible to play for the U.S. national team but made his debut for Armenia last month.
Playing his third international match, he opened the scoring after cutting through Macedonia’s defense in the 40th minute.
Mario Gjurovski tied the score a minute later. Edgar Manucharyan put Armenia ahead in second-half stoppage time, but Ilco Naumovski retied it moments later.
The buildup to England’s match had been overshadowed by tabloid allegations against Rooney.
But the Manchester United forward shrugged off his personal crisis to score his first England goal since last September, slotting home in the 10th minute after meeting Glen Johnson’s cross unmarked.
Adam Johnson added another in the 69th, four minutes after Swiss right back Stephan Lichtsteiner was ejected for fouling James Milner.
Xherdan Shaqiri scored for Switzerland, but Darren Bent sealed England’s win with his first international goal.
England tops Group G on goal difference ahead of Montenegro, which beat Bulgaria 1-0 thanks to Elsad Zverotic’s long-range shot. Stanimir Stoilov quit as Bulgaria’s coach after the game.
“This was my last game as coach of Bulgaria,” Stoilov was quoted as saying on UEFA’s website. “We lost, and our chances of progressing are disappearing. Losing to Montenegro was too much.”
Unlike their European rivals, the Portuguese are still not over their World Cup woes. With coach Carlos Queiroz suspended for six months for insulting anti-doping officials, the team lost 1-0 to Norway, having only managed a 4-4 draw with Cyprus last week.
Norway tops Group H, while Denmark moved up to second by beating Iceland 1-0 in its first qualifier on Thomas Kahlenberg’s injury-time goal.
Germany’s 6-1 victory over Azerbaijan keeps it ahead of Dallas Cowboys jersey
Turkey in Group A on goal difference. Turkey beat Belgium 3-2 after defender Vincent Kompany was ejected.
Olof Mellberg’s 34th-minute sending off made no difference to Sweden, which was already leading 3-0 and went on to rout San Marino 6-0 for the Group E lead.
Ireland moved into the Group B by beating Andorra 3-1. Slovakia behind Ireland on goal difference after stunning Russia 1-0 to earn its second straight qualifying win.
In Group I, Stephen McManus headed in a dramatic winner seven minutes into second-half stoppage time as Scotland came from behind to beat Liechtenstein 2-1. Scotland has four points and is even with Lithuania, which won 1-0 in the Czech Republic.
At Monterrey, Elias Hernandez scored in the 89th minute to lift Mexico over Colombia 1-0 in an otherwise a lackluster exhibition.
