30 Dec 10 Luol Deng Welcomed Back by Chicago Bulls: Is It Too Little, Too Late?

Christian Petersen/Getty ImagesMaybe it's the warm weather in Illinois. Maybe it's a full slate of night baseball games (albeit spring training) scheduled for tonight. Or maybe it's just the Washington Wizards. Whatever it is, I was excited to watch the Chicago Bulls tonight.Sure, I've loved watching Flip Murray and Taj Gibson keep the Bulls close in most games while riding a 10-game losing streak against some of the best teams in the league, but it never felt like winning. Seeing Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Kirk Hinrich, and Luol Reebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
Deng ride the pine was just enough to think that maybe this team could've been something more than a hopeful eight seed in the East. And while dreams of Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh or maybe even LeBron James danced through my mind while the times were rough, there was still a feeling of sorrow for what could have been. Were they a title contender? Not close. Could they have been a No. 4 seed in the East? Very easily. But roster dumps, key injuries, and an overall lack of depth brought the Bulls back to reality and back to the sub-.500 realm. But still something compelled me to watch a seemingly meaningless game (barring a win in Toronto) against a team engulfed in the middle of scandal with arguably their "franchise player".It wasn't that Shaun Livingston (a hometown hero from where I'm from) has finally found himself a consistent gig, and it wasn't to see if Andray Blatche would throw a temper tantrum.I guess the quick answer could be that, for once, the Bulls looked like, well, the Bulls. With recent contributions from Murray, Hakim Warrick, and Acie Law, it was tough to figure out at times what team I was actually watching. But joining Rose, Hinrich, and Noah (who all have recently returned from injuries) was Luol Deng who had missed theReebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey
previous 11 games with a calf sprain. Now I'm not saying that Deng is equitable to say an Aramis Ramirez comeback for the Cubs last season. But I am saying that Ramirez's return last season (along with the return of injured catcher Geovany Soto) created a feeling much like Jake and Elwood Blues felt when "they got the band back together".Ironically enough, though, it seems that the Bulls are headed for a similar fate as the 2009 Cubs in that they don't look destined for the playoffs. However, there is a nice sense of comfort when a team has all of its pieces back in place, even if it's with only eight games remaining. Then again, most counted the team out against the defending champions last April, and instead the lack of faith caused an inspired team to go head-to-toe withone of Reebok Dallas Cowboys #9 Tony Romo Realtree camo Jersey
the best teams in the leaguein what was the best first-round playoff series in the history of the NBA.If this Bulls team can somehow rekindle the fire that got them nationally recognized last season, what's stopping them from wrestling the final playoff spot from the fighting Chris Bosh's? Unfortunately, it's the Cavs and, yet again, the Celtics standing in their way.

29 Dec 10 NBA Playoffs: Five Reasons Portland Trail Blazers Could Pounce in the West?

This article is written by Phil Kovalev, Hoops4Life columnist. This article also can be found at Hoops4Life.comI Believe.Alongside the breezy winds and the arousing sound of bird tweets, that the month of April brings within itself, there's something out there that no man expects. With 8 games separating the No. 1 (LA Lakers) and No. 8 (OKC Thunder) seeds in the Wild West, nothing is predictable.Yet, most unlikely, and very similar to the Houston Rockets of 2009 (Beating Portland without home advantage in the first round and taking the Lakers to game 7, without Yao in the second), my honest opinion tells me the Portland Trail blazers are going to be the Black (with red and silver trim) Horse of the Western Conference this year.Elaboration is a must.No RoyWell, a lot of Chicago Bears jersey
you would probably think i've gone into some kind of a self-destruct mode, but the truth might just stand for me here. The Portland Trail Blazers have played some of their best offensive basketball this year, with Brandon Roy on the sidelines. Now, I'm not saying Roy is a ballhogevery coach in the NBA will tell you Roy will prefer the assist over the bucketbut when Roy is not playing, it makes the other players on the court think. It makes them step up. Suddenly, there's much more ball movement on offense. Coach Nate McMillan calls less and lesser ISO plays.Blazers have played 16 games without their franchise player this season. In only six of those games did the Blazers put up less points on the scoreboard than their season average. Yet, in another six, they put more a hundred (Blazers avg. 98PPG). Plus, They averaged one more assist (21) without Roy. That same team-play, would be most necessary to create some confidencebuilding easy points on the road, in the first two games of the first round.Paul AllenBattling cancer, Mr. Allen is still there, sitting, witnessing the live action from his courtside seat at the Rose Garden. Allen barely misses games. The players always rave about their warm, down-to-earth relationship with their owner. There is absolutely no way, that the Blazers are going to be outplayed or outhustled at the Rose Garden with Mr. Allen sitting there. The Blazers' dedicated owner has done everything in his power, to make this franchise successful, and that's a good opportunity for the players and coaches to step up a notch, for the man who was diagnosed with cancer last November.DepthRudy Fernandez, Martell Webster, Jerryd Baylesstwo of those three will come off the bench in case Roy won't be cleared to play in the first round. While being unpredictable, Webster enters the playoffs hitting 50 percent on 10 three pointers in the last 6 games, followed by a sharp fourth quarter performance that got the Blazers a much needed win at Staples Center. It's much of the same case with Rudy and Baylesseach one can suddenly explode, especially speaking of the Spaniard, who buried five long-range bombs at 71% at last year's Game 4 in Houston, only to see the Blazers lose another Cincinnati Bengals jersey
thriller. (86-83).Don't underestimate the rest of the blazers bench either. Rookies Dante Cunningham and Jeff Pendergraph are as tough as you can find in the current draft class, and could at ease, provide some vital hustle off the bench. Patty Mills and Travis Diener are bench-boundeach one of them, though, presents a unique skill (Speed and 3Pt shooting respectively) that can be deadly if used well.Veteran LeadershipSay what you will, when it's the month of April, I'd take Marcus Camby or Andre Miller over almost any point guard and center outside probably, Billups and Dwight. It's not about the skill level right here. It's about the knowledge. It's about the focus level. It's about doing the right things, in the locker-room, before and throughout the game. Stepping in to take the charge. Knowing the momentum of the game, and that one of the referees.Last year, The Trail Blazers got the 4th seed, and were ready to face a McGrady-less Houston Rockets in the first round of the Playoffs. You all should've seen the faces of the Blazers players during intros of Game 1. I wouldn't call it arrogance, because Sarge McMillan knows how to handle that stuff most of the time. But something was missing. That knowledge. The Blazers were just too innocent. Too innocent to predict the bombs Yao Ming would drop just 10 minutes later, and boy...when It rains, it pours.Because this was the first game, and also the first couple of minutes of the first game the first couple of minutes can set the tone for the game, and the first game can set the tone for the series, Yao said. The 7-foot-6 Yao scored nine of Houston first 11 points and finished with 24 in the Rockets 108-81 Win. Yao barely played the rest of that game. One thing I guarantee you. Be it Utah, Denver, whoever. This year is going to be different. No. it's not that I'm sure the Blazers will come firing in all cylinders, beating their opponent by 20+ like Houston did last year. But add the savvy Miller, Camby, Juwan Howard and the last year's experience, and it's a progress you can never measure on the stat sheet.Andre Miller is my X-factor here. In the past month-and-a-half, Dre's been taking almost every PG in the League to the Miller academy of basketball. Schooling J-Kidd, (19,10,3,3) Steve Nash (22,9,3,2) and simply handling Russel Westbrook like a child in one of the most important games of the season (26 points, 9-18 FG, 7-7 FT, 4 AST, 6 REB, 3 STL). This guy has some Denzel 'He Got Game' magic within him.KarmaWell, last but not least, the real X-Factor. The Karma. This has been a season from hell for the Blazers.Greg Oden, has started the first 21 games of the season, giving the Blazers 2.3 Blocks per game, alongside an unexplainable relaxing presence, one that makes sense only if you truly watch all the games from start of the season. Heck, even statistically, Greg averaged 15.6 Points, 9.2 Boards, 2.4 Blocks on 62% shooting from the field while shooting 77% on 40 Free throws in the last seven games before the season ending injury. You simply had to watch those games and see how dominant he was, only to go down with an heartbreaking injury.Along came Roy (16 games), Nicolas Batum (45 games), Rudy Fernandez (20 games), Joel Przbilla (51 games). Should I mention that Travis Outlaw became available only after the All-Star break?I'm not about whining, but there's a reason for all that. There's a reason Kevin Pritchard has transformedCleveland Browns jersey
this franchise from a jail-breaking team, to a group of guys that spend most of its free time on Make-it-better and NBA Cares projects. There's a reason that Andre Miller and Marcus Camby have shared some of their most productive years in Denver together. There must be. And for once, even though I'm sure the refs will be there to blow the party, the gods of basketball should be there, watching for their Trail Blazers.Ask 'sheed, Ball don't lie.

28 Dec 10 2010 NBA Playoffs: Cavaliers Will Not Beat the Celtics in a Half-Court Series

Gregory Shamus/Getty ImagesLike it or not, sometimes all you have to do is listen to Charles Barkley to understand what right, or what wrong, with the Cleveland Cavaliers. At halftime of Monday night TNT telecast of Game Two of the Cavs playoff series with Boston, Barkley expressed his frustration with Cleveland slow tempo in the first half. Then he said something that should resonate up and down the Cavaliers bench, startingor maybeendingwith Mike Brown. The Cavaliers, said Barkley, have better players now, but theyre playing the same Buffalo Bills jersey
way they did three years ago.Ouch.He was right, though, and if the first half was Exhibit A, then the second was Exhibit B.The Celtics embarrassed the Cavs in the third quarter and held off a late Cleveland rally to earn a convincing 104-86 win and gain home court advantage in the series.Look, the Celtics can only play one way: slow. They can come at you in spurts, but theyre a slow down, look inside, and shoot outside team. They live by it and they die by it, and Monday night they were very alive, indeed.Rajon Rondo scaled back on his own offense while setting up his teammates with 19 assists. The result was that six Boston players scored in double figures, including 17 points from the heretofore silent Rasheed Wallace.Ray Allen led the Celtics with 22 points, and Kevin Garnett, despite a lackluster shooting night, hustled his way to 18 points and 10 rebounds to give Boston a strong presence underneath. It wasn until the game was nearly out of reach that the Cavaliers seemingly came to life, running and gunning their way to a 15-0 stretch that nonetheless left them trailing by 10, 91-81,with 4:33 left.It was the proverbial too-little-too-late, however, and when the magic wore off, the series was tied, 1-1. Cleveland had frittered away their home court advantage. Why? Go back to what Barkley said. To be honest, go back to what Barkley has always said about the Cavaliers, going back to that unlikely appearance in the 2007 finals against San Antonio. The team plays slow-down, half-court basketball, Carolina Panthers jersey
when theyre built for speed. Barkley pins that on Brown. There no question that Brown is one of the best defensive coaches in the game. His offensive mindset has been called into question more than once, however. It seems unlikely that Boston could run with Cleveland over a seven-game series. In fact, it would be a surprise if the Celtics kept up with an up-tempo approach by the Cavs for one night. If that means keeping a J.J. Hickson on the floor, youthful exuberance and all, so be it. If it means employing more of the aggressive Delonte West or the athletic Jamario Moon in place of Anthony Parker to jump-start the offense, fine.Letting the Celtics get back and get set on defense only plays into Boston hands, however. It puts all the pressure on your shooters, and on Monday night they simply didn deliver.Mo Williams coughed up a 1-for-9 night from the field, and Parker was an equally dismal 2-for-7. When your starting backcourt totals 10 points on 3-of-16 shooting, you know youre in for a long night. So run. Run the ball from the opening tip until the final buzzer. Run the ball right at the Celtics, and don stop. The Cavs have the deeper bench. If it a matter of who gets tired first, they should win the war.Instead, the Celtics won a key battle, and now the outcome is at least somewhat in doubt. It shouldn be, and the Cavaliers should remain confident. They have the talent to win this series. The Celtics have the richer history and the championship pedigree, however. I wrote recently about what a difference Chicago Bears jersey
it can make. Monday night was the perfect example. If the Cavaliers use their athleticism to their advantage, they will win a game in Boston and return home a more confident team.If they continue to slow things down on offense, however, theyll give the Celtics hope; and hope, as Andy Dufresne once said, is a good thingin this case, for the guys in green. That a risk the Cavaliers can afford to take.

27 Dec 10 LeBron James: King Or Villain?

It seems to me lately there been some talk about this guy in the NBA, some player named LeBron James. Now apparently this player and his team just lost a disappointing series to the Boston Celtics, and soon he going to be a free agent. Apparently, he also a very good player, who could Reebok San Francisco 49ers #21 Frank GORE Realtree camo Jersey
very well be an all time great player. There been lots of talk about where he should go in free agency, where he actually will go, who would give him the most money, who would give him the best chance to develop his legacy. Now I don know much about basketball, but I do know something else. If this LeBron person wants to develop his legacy, there really only one team that makes sense to sign with. The Cleveland Cavaliers are this team.A team like the New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls, or Miami Heat may provide the best chance to win a championship soon, but if LeBron is as good as people say, and he wants to be remembered as one of the all time greats, Cleveland is the place to be.Cleveland is generally considered to be cursed as far as sports go. They haven won a major championship in anything since 1964, when the Cleveland Browns won a NFL Championship. The Browns of the NFL and Indians of the MLB are generally considered to be in the bottom quarter of their respective leagues. The Cavs have been the cities only glimmer of hope, and LeBron has been the paramount reason for this. Ever since drafting LeBron first overall in 2003, the Cavs have only gotten better and better, climaxing in the franchises first ever trip to Reebok Washington Redskins #98 ORAKPO Realtree camo Jersey
the NBA Finals in 2007. Though the last few years theyve failed to reach the Finals, the Cavs have still been among the best teams in the NBA.CONTINUEMatt is a contributing author at Sports Jabber. Join in the discussion on this and other topics in the NEW Sports Jabber Forums!

26 Dec 10 2010 NBA Playoffs: What's Up Doc? Celtics Playoff Run May Be Up A River

Elsa/Getty ImagesI have had a high level of respect for Boston Celtics coach, Glen 'Doc' Rivers, in past. But that status was brought down a rung following an incident that occurred in Game 4 of their series with the Orlando Magic. In returning to the floor following a third quarter shot attempt, Reebok New York Giants #27 Brandon Jacobs Realtree camo Jersey
the Magic's Dwight Howard accidentally hit the Celtics' Glen "Big Baby" Davis in the face as Howard's left armdelivered the blow on his follow through. As Davis lay on his back and Orlando transitioned to a fast break with numbers, Rivers could clearly be seen yelling and cajoling Davis to get up.Davis gamely rose to his feet and proceeded to stagger down the court, reaching a point just beyond the half court stripe before falling into the arms of referee, Joey Crawford, who witnessed the lurching Davis' attempt to negotiate the court wildly, not unlike a derailed freight train.I know that 'Doc' was frustrated by the listless play of the Celtics at that point, and certainly has been at wit's end on occasion by the immature antics that "Big Baby" has exhibited in a short NBA career. But, Rivers' insensitive act in chiding Davis was disappointing and lacked maturation as well. In the aftermath, Davis was determined to have suffered a concussion. To truly add insult to injury, Rivers did not take blame for his callous treatment of Davis during the tilt, but instead professed to know nothing of Glen's status for Game 6, deriding Davis' injury by stating that Glen was "a little out there anyway."What had been a disappointment in Rivers' behavior instead became a blemish to his coaching record, and may yet sabotage the ongoing playoff run for the Celtics. Not only must 'Doc' all ready worry in controlling his "Three Angry Old Men" - Kevin "Elbow And Arrow" Garnett, Paul "Hypo" Pierce, and Rasheed "T"Wallace - Reebok New York Jets #6 Mark Sanchez Realtree camo Jersey
but now must erase this blemish between himself and Davis."Big Baby" performed like, well a man, when he attempted to right himself and stagger down the court. Thank goodness he didn't pancake Crawford. .Perhaps it is Rivers' turn to man up and apologize to Davis prior to Game 6. That is, if "Big Baby" can even return to the fray.

25 Dec 10 Serge Ibaka Making A Name For Himself In The NBA

Dilip Vishwanat/Getty ImagesThis year the Oklahoma City Thunder (14-8) are currently only 2.5 games off of first place in the Northwest Division. Credit has gone to Russell Westbrook this year for fueling OKC and deservedly so, but we also need to highlight the contributions provided from second year player Serge Ibaka. Drafted 24th overall in the 2008 NBA Draft, after a strong performance at the 2008 Reebok Eurocamp in which he was named MVP, Ibaka has emerged as one of the best role players in the NBA this season. He doesn't quite get the distinction of San Francisco 49ers jersey
being a six man because he has started 11 games already this season due to injuries and match up decisions. He has good mechanics on his jumper and has solidly adapted to the league. Ibaka's 11.5 rebounding rate (per 48 minutes) ranks higher than David West, LeBron and Brook Lopez, and he's the only player in the NBA to rank in the top 40 in rebounds, top 10 in blocks and field goal shooting and shoot over 80 percent from the line;he's 8th in field goal shooting and 6th in blocks. Those stats are incredible considering the fact he's only averaging 27 minutes on the season. Now, if you adjusted those rates to 48 minutes, he would be averaging a little over 20 points, 13 boards and 3 blocks a game, good enough to put him in the West's elite crop of power forwards.Ibaka does a good job of hustling around the basket and Seattle Seahawks jersey
keeping happy feet; meaning he stays on his toes in anticipation of an offensive rebound. That tactic helps him excel at second-jumping and out leaping his opponents. He crashes the boards with ease and his hustle on both ends of the floor is undeniable.Furthermore, I believe he can turn into one of the West's premier pick and roll players due to the fact that he already excels at diving to the rim and is immensely athletic. He can finish with either hand and is an adequate passer finding teammates who cut along the baseline.Think a poor man's Amare Stoudemire. The only difference is Ibaka is committed on the defensive end. Thanks to his long arms and uncanny timing, he waits until the last possible second to contest shots, which is an asset to his team. Because of his good judgment, it allows Ibaka to stay on his feet a St. Louis Rams jersey
second longer; aiding his teammates with help around on the basket or out on the perimeter defending against competent scorers. After all he did lead all rookies in shot-blocking a year ago.Better yet, he's only 21 years old giving him plenty of room to learn the nuances of the game, giving further evidence of his immense potential. With an enriched post-game, Ibaka could be another lethal weapon in the Thunder's arsenal

24 Dec 10 San Antonio Spurs: Should They Change Their NBA Mascot Like Ole Miss Did?

Should this be the mascot of the Alamo City?Getty Images/Getty ImagesSATIRE — What has three chins, four legs including two arms as big as legs, and a graduate degree from a university with an agricultural extension in its official name (A&M)?If you answered by saying half the women in San Antonio, then you are correct rude boys and gals. The Alamo City consistently ranks in the annual Top 10 Obese Cities in America. One would think that the River Creek extension from Brooklyn Street to Pearl Brewery would provide incentive for Reebok Chicago Bears #54 Brian Urlacher Realtree camo Jersey
more people to go walking to slim down.Nope. Even the park policemen prefer to use “river” boats instead of walking.I wrote that the San Antonio Spurs Coyote was a symbol of a Mexican drug cartel, and it caused an outrage among mascot policemen that has yet to subside. On the heels of my article, it was announced that the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) was changing its mascot from a caricature of a former Confederate gentleman to a black bear.Officially called the Ole Miss Black Bear, the new face of the university could be viewed as worse than the original Ole Mississippi Rebel mascot. Why is it a “black” bear some people will ask, “Why it gotta be black?”The retort might be that Winnie the Pooh is hardly appropriate as the mascot for a football team where men have to be fearsome in order to withstand the train wreck-like collisions that occur after almost every snap. But oh snap, the state of Mississippi was one of the most violent and racist states ever to disgrace the planet during the Civil Rights Movement and during the Civil War, Reconstruction, and…Well, you get the general idea.“What’s the big idea,” San Antonio Spurs fans exclaimed after my article regarding the Spurs’ mascot and its ties to the Beltran-Leyva boss who was arrested last month while sporting a Spurs T-shirt. The images caused fans of the team much chagrin as one can imagine. The Spurs organization prides itself on having a squeaky clean image. But I need to explain myself. I was only attempting to better the image of the Spurs as an organization. It was organizational and not personal.A close family member of mine worked for years in the San Antonio front office before moving on to bigger and better opportunities within the great Lone Star State. My article was about the principle. It’s principalities in this. Not to mention powers and rulers of darkness in high places.Seeing that “El Grande” the alleged overlord of the Beltran-Leyva cartel was arrested in a Spurs T-shirt, thereby subliminally identifying himself with the Spurs’ mascot Coyote, I have a couple more suggestions.Just a couple. This “couple” will be clearer by the time you finish this article.Since the mascot has now achieved such a grimy correlation, coyote is slang for a human smuggler then maybe it should take on a whole new look and feel.Seeing that the Alamo City is one ofReebok Chicago Bears #6 Jay Cutler Realtree camo Jersey
the fattest cites ever to weigh down the planet’s gravity, I have a suggested nickname for the possible Spur’s replacement-of-the-Coyote mascot:The new mascot could possibly be dubbed “Marilyn the Moo,” or Moo-Moo for short.I’m saying change the mascot from a Coyote to a cow.Calling a cow a cow and showing it what it looks like in the mirror would give it more incentive to get out and walk off a few pounds, I humbly suggest.Hey this is a better suggestion than having people chase chupacabras to lose pounds, in the way that some people chase rabbits to increase their speed. Google chupacabra.Speaking of rabbits, the Spurs Coyote actually has ears that resemble a rabbit’s ears. This suggests to me that the mascot is a hybrid rabbit-coyote.Or is it a chupacabra-coyote: a chupayote? Aha. Things are starting to make sense.Marilyn the MooAnd if it don’t make dollars, then it don’t make cents.Common sense tells me that Marilyn the Moo should have a help-mate: “Billy the Bull.”And since the Pope recently named the next Archbishop of San Antonio, the Catholic mascot so to speak, have the new priest marry Moo-Moo and Billy.Bill the event as Moo-Moo marries Bee-Bee and cut me a check covering 90 percent of the profits. It was Great Lake’s idea after all.Moo and Bee will be the most popular new couple in the Alamo City. The new head of the San Antonio Archdiocese could perform the wedding during halftime of the Spurs-Clippers game to boost attendance.Attend to this fact folks. In only three weeks writing on B/R I have become the most prolific writer ever to grace the bathroom walls at local hangout Fatso’s. Reebok Dallas Cowboys #82 Jason Witten Realtree camo Jersey
Fatso’s is a so-called restaurant where San Antonio Purrs fans hang out, and I mean that literally seeing some of the cows in Daisy Dukes. But I digress. As I was saying.I am on my way to being the best at ever doing it. You’re already the best at ever booing it.Boo me now, hate me later. It just makes Great Lake even greater.I need to go think up a name for the children that the new Spurs' mascots will have. Send me your cards, letters, suggestions, and hate. This has been another installment of my Reasoning on the River Walk series. I am your humble host and resident Rude Boy: Lake Cruise.

23 Dec 10Kobe Bryant: Is He Really Sending the Wrong Message To Kids with New Ad?

I come home, flip on the T.V. and the first thing I see is Kobe's face blown up on Outside The Lines. The recent rave about Kobe's appearance on the new game Call Of Duty: Black Ops hasbeen blownway out of proportion. As sports fans, it's fun and exciting to see a well known athlete we look up to Buffalo Bills jersey
relate to us in a way besides dunking a ball or making ESPN's Top Ten.What I don't understand is why so many critics are beginning to appear. It is natural that Kobe is receiving attention for appearing on such a popular video game commercial, but it seems obvious that most of the publicity is actually criticism.Psychology majors, youth football coaches and many others have made their messages clear, and honestly that's there only way of receiving unnecessary attention."I couldn't believe it was him," Walker says, "What's wrong with him?"Coach Walker has dealt with many deaths, consisting of young kids, even some of whom he had coached. Just lastMonday, Walker was preparing a funeral for a 14-year-old kid who had played under him for five years. It is a difficult job to deal with so many deaths, at such a young age, but what does this really have to do with Kobe Bryant?Kobe has merely appeared in a simple commercial consisting of other celebrities, including Jimmy Kimmel and many others. The theme of the commercial is: "There is a soldier in all of us," and the main point of showing this commercial with various celebrities is to show that people in all walks of life can join the Call Of Duty Community. Honestly, what is wrong with that?Everyone is comparing Kobe to a controversial incident with Allen Iverson. Just about ten years ago, Iverson came out with a rap album. It consisted of him talking about how he carried guns, did drugs, and most importantly, that he was a thug. Now this was a huge deal considering even NBA Commissioner David Stern got involved, but this is completely different from Kobe's current situation. Iverson actually physically said that he did all of those things and that he supported them, the most one can say about Kobe is that he impliedsome sort of negative message consisting of violence and war.No one should take a video game seriously; I highlight game for a reason. The fact is, Kobe wasn't actually shooting someone, he was merely holding an Carolina Panthers jersey
assault rifle with his nickname (Black Mamba) on the side. When a superstar athlete and a talk show host are walking around with machine guns and pistols, I hope everyone can take a breath and simply laugh off the silly concept of the commercial. The saddest part of this whole situation is the pathetic doctors, parents, and others who are trying to point fingers at Kobe for appearing on a commercial that in their words is either mocking the very real war that is going on, or that Kobe is simply promoting violence. The CEO of Major League Gaming came onto Outside The Lines and basically said that: "Entertainment is what it is. It is where we all go to get away from the realities of the day." These words could not be any more true.At the end of the day, Call Of Duty: Black Ops is part of the gaming industry, which is part of the entertainment world. This has nothing to do with Kobe and what he stands for. He might be playing this game as we speak, but we all know that Kobe isn't going to go out into the streets holding a gun, promoting war and violence, and that holds true for the majority of kids or adults playing any war game.Once again, don't take this commercial so literally. Kobe merely came out and promoted the game, not the theme of violence or war, Chicago Bears jersey
and I hope all of you have already figured that out. Before I end, I would like to acknowledge those that are truly dealing with war or violence, that this game may appear as an insult towards those serving, or those who have been lost, but I simply want to put out the reality that Kobe has nothing to do with this problem.

Why Mr. Steve Blake Should Come Off the LA Lakers' Bench

Doug Pensinger/Getty ImagesThese last few weeks have been nothing but progressionfor the Lakers. The Lakers have young potential and now a veteran sharp shooter by the name of Steve Blake who can lead the Lakers secondary unit. This is another brilliant move by Laker GM Mitch Kupchak.Once again Jerry Buss has made a brilliant and unselfish move to sign Blake as a Mid-level exception player and it will be worth every penny.Like I've said before, all the Lakers need is either a solid point guard who can run the the triangle Indianapolis Colts jersey
offense or a sharp shooter. With Blake, the Lakers gained both.People may laugh at this move by Kupchak but I can only praise it. The beauty of the Triangle Offense is that it does not require a "true" point guard. As long as someone can keep possession of the ball and can create good looks for the other players, the Lakers don't need a "true" point guard.Watching the Blazers in Oregon, I have seen Blake play multiple times. Trust me, it will be a picture perfect match, and here's why.If Derek Fisher can provide 20-25 minuets as a starter and if Steve Blake is willing to come off the bench (which he should gladly do), this team is unbeatable. Fisher would provide his usual numbers and his defense and when he needs rest, Blake can come off the bench and continue what Fisher has been already doing.Neither Blake nor Fisher would really be starting, it would all depend on the match up's that night. If you think about the potential for the Lakers off the bench, it's unreal.Steve Blake at (PG), Lamar at (F), Devin Ebanks at (F), and Jacksonville Jaguars jersey
either Kobe, Gasol, or Bynum could be in the game as well with these group of guys.Somebody pinch me please. It can't get much better than this. The key is, Blake must come off the bench. Why?Because Blake cannot defend the premiere point guards around the league. Players such as Chris Paul, Derron William's, Westbrook, Devin Harris, Tyreke Evan's, Chauncey Billup's, etc. Blake may be a better defender than he looks but,the fact is, this league is now dominated by guards and someone like Blake shouldn't kid himself. You're blessed to be on a championship team, do us all a favor and come off the bench. but don't worry you will still play starter type minuets. (Depending on the return of Fisher).Blake will bring another option for the Lakers. Because the Lakers bench has been their weak point, Blake only makes this championship team better. Blake will spread the floor and he can lead this secondary group while the starter rest. He has experience and he is a smart player. Blake rarely misses and he rarely makes mistakes. This is exactly what the Lakers needed, a veteran guard who can stick open jumpers. Like I said, he will definitely spread the floor and this will only make the Lakers more dangerous. This means a most likely farewell to Farmar. I'm glad, though Farmar has shown sparks of potential, he continues to disappoint in the overall. You have had your chances Farmar, it's time we let you go and bring in someone who can do the job right. As for Shannon Brown and Vujicic, this leaves them with a golden opportunity. If Brown stays, this could mean more rest for players like Kobe and Gasol, which is exactly what we need. Brown and Vujicic could share the two and three-spot (if Brown is willing) and this would Kansas City Chiefs jersey
mean the Lakers second unit could be three-point oriented. When a bench can score a lot of points it obviously helps their momentum and confidence. This Laker bench could be devastating if they are consistent and healthy. The Lakers will be the favorites for the title once again, going into the 2010-2011 NBA Season (if there is one), but it will all depend on Blake's attitude and how hard he wants to work. Welcome to the "city of angels" my friend

Carl Crawford On The Boston Red Sox: Double Trouble For Tampa Bay Rays

Crawford is a rare five-tool playerJ. Meric/Getty ImagesThis Article was first featured on New England Sports Online: Carl Crawford on the Red Sox: Double Trouble for the Rays. Follow me on Twitter for an always fresh perspective @neso17.Carl Crawford is truly an intriguing player. He is arguably the game’s most feared five-tool player, in that he can hit for average, hit for power, steal bases, field well and throw well.Crawford has stolen 50 bases five times in his career, including one 60 steals season. His lowest steal total for a season (other than his rookie year) New York Jets jersey
came in 2008 with 25, when he only played in 109 games. At this point, here’s what the Red Sox lineup would presumably look like:1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B3. Carl Crawford, LF4. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B5. Kevin Youkilis, 3B6. David Ortiz, DH7. J.D. Drew, RF8. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C9. Marco Scutaro, SSI have heard people criticizing the decisions Sox’ GM Theo Epstein has made this off-season, saying that re-signing Victor Martinez and Adrian Beltre would make the Sox’ lineup as dangerous as it currently looks. As of now, are the Sox Better than they were last year?As of now, are the Sox Better than they were last year?Yes100.0%No0.0%Yes, but because they'll be healthy (not b/c of additions)0.0%Total votes: 33However, Adrian Beltre has had two great seasons in his entire career, both of which were contract years. In Beltre’s twelve-year career, he’s only hit above .300 twice, and has only topped 25 home runs three times.Victor Martinez will certainly be missed, especially since it is unclear whether or not his replacement, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, can produce in the major leagues.Martinez is one of the best hitting catchers in the MLB, if not the best, and considering the wear-and-tear his body takes, he is durable, hits for average and belts home runs. His fielding was good, but he was unable to throw runners out. Also, with four years on the contract he earned from Detroit, he’ll be 36 at the expiration of the deal. Generally, catcher’s careers are Oakland Raiders jersey
shorter than most players, since their body does take a beating. The Sox did not need another Mike Lowell situation down the road.To see whether or not this Red Sox team is better than the one they would have had by reusing last year’s squad, let’s compare each team position by position.Right Field: J.D. Drew vs. J.D. Drew;Wash.Center Field: Jacoby Ellsbury vs. Mike Cameron;Ellsbury. Jacoby Ellsbury is a better player. He has had a better average over his career (albeit a short one thus far) and is brutally dangerous on the base paths.Left Field: Jacoby Ellsbury vs. Carl Crawford;Crawford. First of all, we must realize that the team’s left field last season was made up of a platoon of Darnell MacDonald, Daniel Nava, Ryan Kalish and Jeremy Hermida. Crawford is an upgrade over every one of those players.Against Ellsbury: Crawford has a slight speed disadvantage, but has put up All-Star numbers throughout his career, showing consistency and veteran poise and leadership.Second Base: Dustin Pedroia vs. Dustin Pedroia;Wash.Short Stop: Marco Scutaro vs. Marco Scutaro;Wash.First Base: Kevin Youkilis vs. Adrian Gonzalez;Gonzalez. Both are phenomenal defenders. Youkilis has shown himself to be one of the all-time great defensive first basemen after not only earning a gold glove but also setting the record for most error-less games in-a-row. Gonzalez, although he holds no records, has won two gold gloves.Offensively, Youkilis has a better career OBP and batting average. Philadelphia Eagles jersey
However, Gonzalez’s numbers are hurt by his first two years in Texas, where he played sparingly. Once in San Diego, he began to put up massive numbers. His OBP is just 20 points lower than Kevin Youkilis’ ridiculous .394.His batting average, .288, is just 6 points less than Youk’s .294, and both strike out with the same regularity (both averaging about 120 K’s/season).However, it is A-Gon’s home run total that sets him apart. He average 32 bombs per season to Youk’s 23, and he also averages more RBI.Nonetheless, it is not as if the Sox lost Kevin Youkilis, so his abilities are still a part of this lineup.Third Base: Kevin Youkilis vs. Adrian Beltre; Youkilis. I think it safe to say that Beltre will not be a part of this team next season, simply because there’s no space for him at either corner of the infield. Youkilis is a more consistent fielder than Beltre, although Adrian does have a knack for flashy, bare-handed plays.Still, Youkilis isn’t afraid to get down and dirty on any play, and makes his share of highlight plays as well. Offensively, as I mentioned earlier, Beltre has had two good seasons, both in contract years. With a long-term deal likely on its way, Beltre won’t be in a contract year for quite some time.Youk is a consistent fielder and a dangerous hitterOtto Greule Jr/Getty ImagesYouk has better career numbers in terms of average and OBP, and has consistently put up his high numbers. Beltre, if his two fluke seasons are not considered, is a career .265 hitter who barely averages 20 HR/season.Catcher: Jarrod Saltalamacchia vs. Victor Martinez;Martinez. There’s no way around this one. Martinez is just a better player compared to Salty. He’s a proven veteran who can put up big numbers in key situations.Overall: As a whole, the Sox have a more balanced offensive attack with more weapons, including speed and power. The only flaw I see with the current lineup is how lefty-heavy it is. Only Pedroia, Youk, Scutaro and Salty are right-handed hitters.Against the Yankees, who will feature C.C. Sabathia, potentially Andy Pettite, and possibly Cliff Lee (all pitchers who are very tough on lefty hitters), the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Sox may have trouble.Luckily, they have players coming off the bench who showed that they had starting capabilities last year, including Daniel Nava and Darnell MacDonald. It is clear the Sox are a better team with Crawford, but they also cut the Rays’ squad apart by removing their most potent weapon. Both the Sox and Yankees had a better record than the Rays last year. The Rays have gotten worse, and the Sox have improved. The AL East is once again a two-horse race between the Red Sox and Yankees.Liked this?

20 Dec 10 Cam Newton and Reggie Bush: What's the Difference?

Kevin C. Cox/Getty ImagesThe NCAA recently reinstated Cam Newton while rumors continue to swirl about his possible involvement in a pay-for-play scheme to play college football. With the USC sanctions fresh (and harsh) in everyone's minds, many individuals, including Athletic Director Pat Haden, have called into question how he can be eligible while Reggie Bush was not.Said Haden, "In the Reggie Bush case, when the parent [did] something inappropriate, the kid and the school suffered."But how exactly do the two cases relate? Before we dive into each case, one must remember that, pending an appeal, the NCAA has concluded their investigation of Reggie Bush and USC. The NCAA and the FBI are involved in the Cam Newton allegations and we have only touched the tip of the iceberg with Cam and Auburn. Details are limited at this point and are likely to come out in the coming months to years. The findings by the NCAA on Reggie Bush based on Reggie as the assumed student-athlete:1. Marketing and a sports agency were agreed upon by Reggie's stepfather and an agency partner.2. Round trip Reebok Denver Broncos #15 Tim Tebow Realtree camo Jersey transportation was provided for Reggie's parents and brother to attend the Orange bowl by an agency partner. His family was also provided round trip airfare and accommodations in 2005 for a California game by sports marketers. Are the Cam and Reggie situations similar? Are the Cam and Reggie situations similar?Yes, they're exactly the same.20.9%They are somewhat similar.24.7%Absolutely not.41.7%It's still too early to tell.12.8%Total votes: 2353. Reggie was Reebok Green Bay Packers #12 Aaron Rodgers Realtree camo Jersey provided cash by an agency partner for the down payment, rims, car alarm, and an audio system on a new vehicle. This is key: Reggie is found by the NCAA to be personally involved.4. Hotel accommodations and a limo were provided for Reggie by agency partners.5. Reggie's parents entered into a written agreement for a monthly sum to purchase a property in Spring Valley as well as utilities, furniture, and a washer and dryer. Reggie would pay the agency partner back with money from his professional contract.6. It was acknowledged by USC that he received some (but not all) of the above benefits directly. USC agreed he was ineligible for competition during this time frame.7. A sports marketer paid to have Reggie's Chevrolet Impala repaired after an auto accident.Other allegations involving USC and other athletes also led to the severe sanctions but are not pertinent to this article.--The NCAA findings so far on Cam Newton:The only real fact we have at this point: Cam's father and an owner of a scouting service worked together to actively market him in Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey a pay-for-play scenario to colleges. Also within the NCAA's statement is the following:"Based on the information available to the reinstatement staff at this time [my emphasis], we do not have sufficient evidence that Cam Newton or anyone from Auburn was aware of this activity, which led to his reinstatement," said Kevin Lennon.Otherwise, the NCAA stated it is "policy not to comment on current, pending, or potential investigations."--In Conclusion:1. Reggie Bush was found by the NCAA to be involved in several NCAA violations. This was not just his family accepting money and benefits.2. So far, Cam Newton has not been found by the FBI or NCAA to be personally involved in the pay-for-play scheme. But he has not been cleared by either party. There was just insufficient evidence at this time to prevent him from playing. If, at the end of this, Cam is found eligible but his father is guilty, this will set up a situation that could serve as adangerousprecedent. It will send the messagethat you just need a third party involved and the student-athlete will not suffer consequences. It is still entirely too early to say whether or not USC has a case here. They have good reason to be interested in the similarities of the two cases. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

17 Dec 10 Brett Favre: Why the Minnesota Vikings QB Needs To Quit Now (Like This Week)

Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesBrett Favre is the most decorated quarterback in NFL history.During his time in Green Bay, even if you hated Favre, you had to respect him. He was a rugged, no-excuses quarterback who played in rugged, no-excuse town. It's the place that his untouchable Reebok Minnesota Vikings #4 Brett Favre Realtree camo Jersey
consecutive games started streak began.Favre played the game with a child-like vigor, and although some of his decisions made Packers fans shake their heads in disbelief, those poor choices were accepted due to the magic Favre could create on the next play. That "fear nothing" approach is what made him the legend he is today.Favre wasunceremoniously forced fromGreen Bay and ultimately failed as a New York Jet.He was then brought to Minnesota to be the final piece of a roster that seemed to be Super Bowl worthy. We witnessedhisusual liveliness last year...Favre was a kid again. But true to form, Favre ended last yearexactly how he left Wisconsin; with an interception in the NFC Championship game that cost his team the game.Ever since that ill-advised, across-his-body toss, Favre's slowly been tarnishing his hard-nosed legacy.First, it was another Favre-watch summer, and although not his fault, the overexposure to whether he'd come back or stay in Mississippi was maddening. Then it was the ankle. Then the atrocious, injury-riddled start to this season. Now, all the "fall back" injuries, and more interceptions. When Favre threw for a career high 446-yards at age 41 in a come-from-behind win over the Arizona Cardinals two weeks ago, did Reebok Minnesota Vikings #69 Jared Allen Realtree camo Jersey
we hear about any injuries? No.However, press conferences from each of the Vikings seven losses have not gone without a mention of a "tweak" or "pain" that just may have been the reason for all interceptions. His consecutive games-played streak is still going, but it's hardly going strong.Come on Brett, you're better than that.It seems like the football gods granted Favre his final chance at Super Bowl glory last year, and he fell short. Now, at 3-7, hasn't Favre become more of the problem than the solution.Sure, injuries piled up quickly in Minneapolis this season, but has there ever been a moreembarrassingfall from grace for one of the NFL's greatest, mostelectrifyingplayers?I have little to no faith in Tavaris Jackson, but let the kid get some more experience.Brett's Reebok New England Patriots #12 Tom Brady Realtree camo Jersey
already stated he's done after this season, so as of now Jackson is the future. Well maybe not, but Favre surely isn't.He's extremely gritty and is probably the most courageous quarterback of all-time. After a career loaded with unforgettable moments, it's a shame that this horrid season is the last memory we'll have of Favre.Times up, Brett.

16 Dec 10 Denver Broncos: The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades

The future's so bright we otta wear shades.Doug Pensinger/Getty ImagesGenerally speaking, a writer likes to keep it in the third person when analyzing football games. This day, however, is unique. From here on out, I’d like you to pull up a chair, pay attention in class—don’t say I Reebok Green Bay Packers #12 Aaron Rodgers Realtree camo Jersey
didn’t tell you so—and recognize your local professor is here to help. I’m here to help you. Yes, I'm being cynical and it's satire. But it should strike a chord with a positive response. I’ve had enough, we’ve had enough. So I’m begging you to just take this symbolic effort and carry it over to the game. Tell your friends and fans alike. Send a message to the team in a constructive, fun andpositive manner. In the same spirit, there’s a line in the movie Fever Pitch that I think Broncos fans can relate to right now and have to question supporting the team with their hard-earned dollars at this point. “You love the Red Sox, but have they ever loved you back?” It’s a viable question for Broncos fans, especially those that feel the franchise has sold them short. The winter snow is in the mountains, and it’s on the way to the front-range of Colorado. The Denver Broncos' season is officially in the tank, though not entirely mathematically. As the grey clouds ease their way into the Mile High City on the plain, remember the holiday season is here, and with it a wind of change. Let’s keep in mind there are multiple NFL franchises suffering from blackouts right now because they are failing to put the product on the field. They are failing at reaching the fans. On the personal side, I don’t want to see that come to Denver. But if the franchise refuses to listen to the fanbase, just mark these words: There will be eventual fallout from that. Cheap Sunglasses When you get up in the morning and the light is hurt your headThe first thing you do when you get up out of bedIs hit that streets a-runnin' and try to beat the massesAnd go get yourself some cheap sunglassesOh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah Now go out and get yourself some big black framesWith the glass so dark they won't even know your nameAnd the choice is up to you 'cause they come in two classesRhinestone shades or cheap sunglassesOh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah -ZZ Top / Gibbons, Hill, Beard The Broncos have a very well-documented identity crisis going on. It’s about the team receiving a new stadium from the fans and surrounding community about a decade ago, only to deliver a cheap product on the field. The problem is the Broncos rode a wave of success in back-to-back Super Bowls only to sell the fanbase short. Now, obviously, it was unintentional fallout that eventually saw it lead us to where it is today. Reebok Green Bay Packers #52 Clay Matthews Realtree camo Jersey
However, you have to keep in mind that it was a fanbase that was so strong that it essentially demanded that the franchise rise above the first decade of being cellar dwellers. The team last went 5-15 roughly40 years ago.The Broncos eventually became the most successful NFL franchise in the win department for three solid decades. Now they have come full circle in less than a decade to reach their rock-bottom, humble beginnings again. So moving forward, you have to see it as being an emblematic symbol to send a message back to the team on Sunday when they take on the St. Louis Rams. You have to believe in the power of the masses. Go to Mile High with your cheap sunglasses. Oh-yeah! I Gotta Crazy Teacher, He Wears Dark Glasses It's Thanksgiving week and it’s strange to think, but I’m going to say it: I deserve better, and so do you. We all deserve better than we are getting out of Josh McDaniels and his version of the Denver Broncos, a.k.a. Patriots Mirage West. I am one of the originals who was ridiculed by the Josh McDaniels backers for my not being on board with a number of his decisions since Mike Shanahan’s termination. It’s true, it’s easier to look at things in 20/20 or in a negative light. That, however, was never my personal take.My take has always been about what I’ve seen as being best for the franchise and best for the fans. So I evaluated everything from Jay Cutler to Tim Tebow. But here’s the thing: These decisions have put the fans in disarray and are killing the franchise on a whole new level. The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades! So as your professor of the midway (Ha-Ha-Ha!!!), I feel a personal obligation to set the lot of us all straight in understanding the plight of the 2010 Denver Broncos. With that I felt a stanza of lyrics dating back to the 1980’s is in order to drive the point’s home on this “snow on the way” day in the Mile High City. I find it a temporary panacea for the fans, and it’s something that should become a symbolic sign of uniting the fans while showing displeasure with the current results on the field.Realize this Denver Broncos franchise has not won five out of20 games for the first time since 1970-71. Life itself is somewhat cyclic, and the Denver Broncos have certainly come full circle. The Denver Broncos have shown more flaws than an old celebrity facelift. So on the personal side, I’m over the bashing of Josh McDaniels—I really am. I’m just resigned to the fact that he’s not a very good head coach. I’m resigned to the fact that he dismantled a team on the brink of being a playoff contender and made them one of the worst in franchise history. I study nuclear scienceI love my classesI got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glassesThings are going great, and they're only getting betterI'm doing all right, getting good gradesThe future's so bright, I gotta wear shadesI gotta wear shades “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” Timbuk 3 / Pat McDonald You see, I am your crazy teacher. I prefer professor, but whatever floats your boat. You probably think I’m crazy. In fact, a few weeks ago, many of the Josh McDaniels backers took me to task when I threw out the crazy idea of having John Elway and Jon Gruden come to Dove Valley to help mend fences. I was so crazy, in fact, that in the unscientific poll, 80 percentof the roughly 600 responders sided with my idea. Only 13.5 percent still backed Josh McDaniels as the head coach of the Denver Broncos. OK, so maybe more of Reebok Indianapolis Colts 18 Peyton Manning Realtree camo Jersey
you are on board with the ideas than I just made out, but I’m just here trying to stir the pot a bit. The list of wrongs at this point is self-evident and long, but this NFL franchise has more than a few issues to address and correct. So while I’m here to help, youcan, too. Now is the time to help shape the future of this franchise at Sunday’s game. It’s time the fans stand together and ignore which side of the fence you’re on. It’s time to send a message to the players, the franchise and the owner that the product on the field is not living up. You have to show them just how you see it. So are things going great, and only getting better? There’s just one catch: You gotta wear shades!

Miami Dolphins Grab Victory in Oakland While Jon Gruden News Buzzes Around Town

The Dolphins were in a celebratory mood after putting together a complete game on both sides of the ball. The talk of Miami for the past 24 hours surrounded Jon Gruden.
Yesterday I relayed a Greg Cote story about San Diego Chargers jersey
Gruden possibly coming to coach the Miami Dolphins, along with my feeling about it.
If the reports I'm hearing all over Twitter hold up, I might be half-right—Gruden is coming to Miami, but to coach the Hurricanes.
Now I'm a 'Canes fan as well and upon looking at the situations, Gruden would be better off at The U. More job security, no salary cap to worry about, and the guarantee that if he agrees to take the job he'll actually have a job next season that will pay him in full.
The U would be better for him too. This way, he could choose the athletes he wants to run his offense instead of having to go with what's given to him by a GM. Gruden would also help Miami recruit the Tampa-St. Pete and Orlando areas due to his former position as head coach of the Buccaneers.
But enough Gruden talk, for fittingly the Miami Dolphins were taking on the Oakland Raiders, who gave Gruden his first Head Coaching job.
For the second time in three games, the much-maligned Dolphins coaching staff came up with a good game plan that accentuated the strengths of the team while hiding their weaknesses. The Dolphins offense was the most balanced that its been all season. The team rushed for 186 yards on 49 attempts. Average wise this isn't great, however it showed a commitment to the running game not seen for most of the season.
To add to that, Chad Henne went nfl jersey
a solid 17/30 for 307 yards, two touchdowns, an interception and a passer rating of 100.3.
The Dolphins defense also showed up today. They held the Raiders offense to only 10 points (the other seven came off the opening kick off) and 16 yards rushing.
Yes, 16 rushing yards. The Raiders were ranked second in the league in running the ball going into the game.
The one area that was problematic was special teams.
They gave up an opening kickoff touchdown and Carpenter missed two field goals.
However Carpenter's two missed field goals, usually a time to panic for the 'Phins, turned out to be unneeded.
Ricky Williams' 45-yard touchdown run with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter that cemented the final score made sure of that.
So where does Miami go from here?
They're still alive for the playoffs and have a winnable game against the Browns at home next Sunday. The hope is to stop Peyton Hillis and hope that the Browns start Delhomme. Both are easier said than done.
But for now, let's enjoy the Saints jersey
Dolphins victory on a day that might or might not be a banner day for the University of Miami Hurricanes at the place where the possible next coach of the Canes started his head coaching career.

NFL Picks Against The Spread Week 13: Miami Over 4.5-Point Underdog Cleveland

Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesSomething will have to give in this Sunday when the Cleveland Browns go on the road to take on the Miami Dolphins. The Browns are just 1-4 on the road this season, while the Dolphins are just 1-4 at home. Cleveland snapped a two-game losing streak with a 24-23 win over the Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
Panthers last week. The Dolphins bounced back from an embarrassing loss at home against the Bears, with a 33-17 win at Oakland. While Cleveland is all but out of the playoff picture, the Dolphins still have hope but need to get on a roll to finish the season. If you are thinking about betting on the game this weekend, the current NFL point spreads have the Dolphins favored by 4.5-points over the Browns at home. Cleveland (4-7): The Browns weren’t all that impressive against the Panthers last week as they needed Carolina kicker John Kasey to miss a 42-yard field goal as time expired to pull out the win. Quarterback Jake Delhomme completed 24 of 35 for 245 yards against his former team, but also had two costly interceptions, including one that was returned 37 yards for a touchdown. The Browns jumped out to a 21-14 lead thanks to three touchdown runs by Peyton Hillis, who finished with 131 yards rushing and another 63 yards receiving. If it wasn’t for Hillis, the Browns offense wouldn’t have been able to do much of anything. Rookie quarterback Colt McCoy has still not been cleared to practice, and if he is unable to go, it will be Delhomme back under center. I strongly believe that the Browns are a much better team with McCoy under center, and could be in trouble if he isn’t able to find a way to play this week. Miami (6-5): For whatever reason, the Dolphins continue to play much better football away from home this season. Steelers 43 Polamalu jersey
The win over the Raiders gave the Dolphins their fifth win on the road. Miami last home win came in week 10 when they beat the Titans 29-17. After a dismal performance from backup Tyler Thigpen against the Bears in week 11, the Dolphins decided to go back to Chad Henne; he responded by going 17 of 30 for 306 yards with two touchdowns and just one interception. The Dolphins also got the running game working against the Raiders, as Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams combined for 180 yards and a touchdown. Cleveland has allowed at least 145 yards on the ground in each of their last three games, so expect another big performance from Brown and Williams this week. With star wideout Brandon Marshall sidelined with a hamstring injury, Davone Bess came away with a big time performance, grabbing six catches for 111 yards. Marshall is back practicing this week, but it is still uncertain if he will play this weekend. Looking at the Odds: Even though the Dolphins have struggled at home lately, I think they are the right play in this game. I believe the Dolphins run defense will be able to slow down Hillis, and without Hillis the Browns offense is nothing. Miami is 7-4 ATS this season, and are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games after 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
accumulating more than 350 total yards in their previous game. My final score prediction is Miami 27, Cleveland 17. Interested in making some money this NFL season? Check out what our expert NFL handicappers have to offer in their weekly NFL picks.

ohn Skelton Should Start for the Arizona Cardinals

Ken WhisenhuntChristian Petersen/Getty ImagesLast week Ken Whisenhunt said he wouldn’t start John Skelton at Quarterback this year for the Arizona Cardinals, barring injury, because he didn’t want to lose their “identity”. He also said he didn’t want to “ruin” a young player. The identity has already been lost. It was lost the minute Kurt Warner retired. As far as ruining a young player, why doesn’t that same philosophy apply to Max Hall, who has been obliterated every time 4 Brett Favre White jersey
he’s been put out there? Even without the injuries last week to Max Hall and Derek Anderson, John Skelton needs to start for this Arizona Cardinals football team. The first reason is painfully obvious to everyone involved. Derek Anderson prevents winning. In a recent poll titled, “What would you rather do than watch one more game with Anderson behind center?” the 2nd most popular response was “Poke my eyes repeatedly with paperclips” which followed “Work in a sewage treatment plant without gloves.” Apparently, shoveling some Anderson while gloveless is preferable to blinding yourself. But only barely. This season is a bust for the Arizona Cardinals, standing at 3-9. Yet we’ve learned nothing about this team, other than the fact that they are very bad. The only way to justify such a horrible season is if the Cardinals find their Quarterback of the future in John Skelton. If the rook Skelton manages even a semblance of NFL form it will justify everything that’s happened this year. Even failure will tell us something. It will tell us the Cardinals need to find a long-term Quarterback. Now is the time to exhaust the roster and find out who your players are.Skelton completes a pass to Larry FitzgeraldChristian Petersen/Getty ImagesIt’s telling that when Anderson went down and Hall started taking reps the Arizona crowd cheered. It’s even more telling that when Hall went down in a heap of 6 foot 1 incompetence and Skelton started warming up that the crowd gave him a standing ovation. This was the guy they hadn’t seen, and they gave him a standing ovation. A standing ovation, for a 3rd string Quarterback who hasn’t played a snap and who the coaches top to bottom said wasn’t ready. That tells you the desperation of this fan base, they don’t want to go back to the “Same Old Cardinals”, who regularly put up 4-12 seasons.Skelton’s sampling of Jets 6 Sanchez Jersey
play Sunday is too small to justify any type of anointment. But he showed enough—standing tall in the pocket, looking like an actual NFL Quarterback, completing some nice passes—that he deserves a chance. He made some nice throws, and his one fault, tossing it well over Fitz’s head during a Free Safety blitz, can be excused because he and Fitzgerald weren’t on the same page as far as the blitzing adjustments and routes. That’s to be expected. It’s time to get the team looking forward. It’s time to get the fans looking forward. The only way to do that is to start John Skelton.

Pittsburgh Steelers Ryan Clark Dwight Smith

Cowboys jersey
The free safety position in Pittsburgh was made famous in 2007 because of a guarantee. Going into 2008, the position makes no promises. Because of that lack of security, the Steelers might look into slightly disregarding their longstanding guideline of not bringing in players with character concerns. Former Vikings safety Dwight Smith played under Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin in Tampa Bay when Tomlin was the Buccaneers' secondary coach. Despite two run-ins with Minneapolis Police (once for lewd sexual 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
conduct in a stairwell outside of a night club, the other for marijuana possession in his car, which was recently dropped), Smith was a solid veteran when in Minnesota. In addition, he was brought there by Tomlin when he was the Vikings' defensive coordinator. Smith has eight interceptions over the past two seasons, and was a solid contributor on one of the league's best all-around defenses. The Steelers lost Ryan Clark for the second half of last season, and second-year safety Anthony Smith didn't exactly step up in the veteran's absence. He provides a hard-hitting presence in the secondary, but his mental mistakes make the free safety position a concern going into free agency (starting Feb. 29) and April's draft.Clark suffered an inflamed spleen after the Steelers' 31-28 loss at Denver in Week 7, the result of dehydration and the altitude adjustment, which had adverse effects on a blood condition he has always had. He was placed on the IR and had the spleen removed Nov. 11. While Clark technically cannot be released because he ended the season on injured reserve, his future in the NFL is clearly not assured. It was a huge loss over the course of the rest of the year, considering the Steelers' secondary was attacked without Clark and the injury of strong safety Troy Polamalu. Smith showed flashes of ability, and it is a bit premature to condemn his entire career based on the guarantee he pledged to the media that Pittsburgh would defeat then-undefeated New England in Week 14. The Patriots lambasted the Steelers -- Smith in particular -- in the second half en route to a 34-13 victory. Without Clark, the Steelers look to start Smith at free safety with veteran Tyrone Carter backing him up. Barring the unlikely event that University of Miami stud safety Kenny Phillips falls to the 23rd pick, the Steelers are probably going to go shopping for some depth at that position. If Phillips is there at 23, though, expect the Steelers to spend about six seconds before sending his name up to the commissioner. As for Smith, he makes sense because of his history with Tomlin and the simple fact he's been around the league long enough to provide much-needed veteran savvy at the deep safety spot. He defends the run well but isn't as over-aggressive as Smith against the pass. That aggression led to teams finding plenty of opportunities to hit the deep ball off of a double-move. But Smith's run-ins with the law doomed him in Minnesota, which usually is not something on Dallas Cowboys jersey
the resume of a Steelers free-agent signee. He has another few years of ability left in him, and regardless of a checkered past, he's going to be sought after on the free-agent market. Is his development as a pro under Tomlin enough for Smith to take a smaller deal to play in Pittsburgh? Are the Steelers sold enough on his character to pay a veteran as much as Smith will command on the open market? Perhaps the biggest question is the status of Clark. Breaking it down simply, if Clark is physically unable to play, the Steelers have to bring in a veteran to provide depth at one of their weakest positions. Smith does fit that need.

San Francisco 49ers Mike Rumph Ahmed Plummer Bryant Young Jonas Jennings

The San Francisco 49ers season has been called many things. One of the words that many people have said is injury prone.Through twelve games this year the team has experienced injuries to Mike Rumph, Ahmed Plummer, Bryant Young, Eric Johnson, Jeremy Newberry, and the $36 million dollar man Jonas Jennings. Now let's not kid ourselves here. Even without the current injuries the team itself would still not be playoff-caliber and still could be 2-10 as the thirteenth game of the season approaches. For the team, however, losing six starters for the remainder of 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
the regular season could end up helping them next year. Several key reserves have stepped into the starting roles and are enjoying a good dose of playing experience. Bruce Thornton, Mike Adams, Derrick Johnson, Ben Emanuel, and David Baas have all received more playing time to showcase what they may be able to do. Mike Nolan and his young coaching staff should be constantly evaluating these players to determine what their possible needs could be through the draft and free agency. Most of the above listed players are either rookies or free agents who came out of nowhere to sign on with the team. Of course the San Francisco 49ers will have a plethora of holes to fill but some of these players may provide a good young foundation to build on.

San Francisco 49ers "Years of service earn Larry Allen a pass from OTAs"

Since entering the league out of 4 Brett Favre White jersey
Sonoma State in 1994, Larry Allen has established himself as the premier offensive lineman of his generation. Picked in the second round by the Dallas Cowboys, Allen was the 10th offensive lineman selected in that year's draft. In 12 seasons with Dallas, he made it to 10 Pro Bowls and was honored as a member of the 1990s All-Decade team. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 2006 after being released by the Cowboys. Adding a Hall of Fame-caliber player to the squad paid off when Allen was named to his 11th Pro Bowl despite missing five games because of an MCL injury. His years of premium service have garnered Allen a heightened level of respect from his coaches and teammates. When the 49ers kicked off their voluntary OTAs (organized team activities) earlier this spring, Allen was the only player not in attendance. Head coach Mike Nolan excused him for personal reasons. Oftentimes, players who miss such team activities are usually labeled "me-first" individuals who put themselves above the team. It's clear that Allen doesn't fall into that category, however. When Nolan was asked about Allen's absence, he wasn't exactly concerned. "He is working out, staying in shape and all of that. I'm not concerned too much about that right now." Steelers 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey
Nolan said. Going into his 14th season, the 6-foot-3, 325-pound Allen still plays at a Pro Bowl level. The leadership he provides to the 49ers, particularly to fellow O-linemen, is invaluable, and his locker-room presence and selfless nature will play a pivotal role in San Francisco's continued improvement in 2007.

Tennessee Titans Steve McNair Baltimore Ravens Vince Young Billy Volek

On Wednesday, the Tennessee Titans finally agreed to trade their now former franchise quarterback, Steve McNair, to the Baltimore Ravens for a fourth-round pick in next April's draft. Throughout the offseason, the Titans and McNair have been battling back and forth in regards to his contract, which led to bad blood between the two sides. McNair tried to enter the Titans' facility two months ago to work out, but was denied access because the organization wanted his contract resolved first. As a result, he's been sitting in limbo in hopes of 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey White jersey
a trade. On the heels of a grievance filed by McNair against the Titans for the aforementioned facility-ban, the team and McNair have finally moved on.After the Houston Oilers moved to Nashville and became the Titans in 1997, McNair immediately made the franchise legitimate. The former Alcorn State star immediately won over the Titans' fans for his on-field play and the ability to constantly play through pain.During McNair's 11-year reign in Tennessee, the Titans recorded four playoff appearances and an AFC Championship victory. That win happened in 1999, and McNair nearly led the Titans to a Super Bowl triumph against the St. Louis Rams subsequently, but fell one yard short on the quarterback's infamous completion to receiver Kevin Dyson. Of course, Dyson was tackled by Rams linebacker Mike Jones on the goal-line as time expired. The Titans lost 23-16 in that game, but McNair performed valiantly, throwing for 214 yards and scrambling for another 64. McNair's finest regular season occurred in 2003, when he flung 24 touchdowns and shared the NFL's MVP award with quarterback Peyton Manning. That season the Titans finished with a 12-4 record, then defeated the Ravens in the first round of the playoffs. Following that victory, Tennessee lost a hard-fought battle to the eventual-champion New England Patriots. Had it not been for the brilliance of Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri, McNair and the Titans might have moved on to their second AFC Championship Game appearance.Since the Titans drafted Vince Young with the third overall pick in last April's draft, there wasn't necessarily room for McNair anymore. Along with Young the Titans have solid veteran Billy Volek, who is expected to be handed the reins for next season. 4 Brett Favre White jersey
Either way, the duo of Volek and Young will certainly have themselves a difficult act to follow in McNair's wake.Meanwhile, now that they have a legitimate quarterback, the Baltimore Ravens will have an opportunity to regain their former playoff status.Undoubtedly, the memories of No. 9 in Tennessee will always be limitless. If it weren't for the 33-year-old, the Titans likely never would have become the powerhouse they were in the late '90s and early 2000s. McNair will always be remembered as a selfless warrior in Tennessee, and rightfully so. --Connor J. Byrne can be reached at Get more Steve McNair analysis

Tennessee Titans Pacman Jones West Virginia Mountaineers

When the Tennessee Titans used the sixth overall pick on Adam "Pacman" Jones in the 2005 NFL Draft, they were expecting to get a dominant cornerback with top-notch return skills. After one season in the pros, it's evident Pacman is a terrific contributor on special teams, but he still has much to prove on the defensive side ofSteelers 43 Polamalu jersey
the ball.As a member of the West Virginia Mountaineers between 2002-2004, Jones stood out. In 2003, his first season as a key contributor, he was a second-team All-Big East selection. As a junior in 2004, he closed out his collegiate career by bettering his sophomore season, making the first team of the All-Big East squad. In his rookie campaign, the 5-foot-10, 185-pounder appeared in 15 games, started in 13, made 44 total tackles and racked up 10 pass defenses. When it was all said and done, however, he didn't intercept a pass. Of course, that was much to the Titans' chagrin, since they could have used another defensive playmaker to complement linebacker Keith Bulluck in their 4-12 season. Tennessee's nine total defensive interceptions ranked 30th in the League. What Jones didn't do defensively, he did as a return man. The Georgia native averaged 9.4 yards per punt return and scored a touchdown. On kickoff returns, meanwhile, he averaged a robust 26.2 yards, putting him near the top of the NFL. In 2006, Jones returns to the starting cornerback position, which is where he belongs. Opposite left corner Reynaldo Hill, Pacman is expected to become the kind of playmaker the Titans need in the secondary. The 22-year-old has dealt with some attitude issues in the past, and, to some, those returned to roost in the Titans' first preseason game on Saturday night. He was involved in a couple of verbal disagreements with Saints running back Reggie Bush, including a face-to-face confrontation early in the second quarter. Though many would call Jones out for that, it was clear he was demonstrating his willingness to be a fiery competitor, and that's exactly what Tennessee's defense requires at this point. After the '06 season comes to its 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
conclusion this winter, expect Jones' interception total to eclipse zero. It will have to, if the Tennessee Titans don't want just another first-round bust on their hands.--Connor J. Adam Schefter "Art Shell Firing" Rumors

It's not every day more than a couple of fans wish an ex-Denver Broncos analyst was right about something.Adam Schefter, who reported for the Denver Post for 15 years, stated on Thursday that Raiders owner Al Davis is planning on firing head coach Art Shell at season's end. Now a member of 36 Bettis White Jersey
the NFL Network, Schefter followed up by hinting that current defensive coordinator Rob Ryan would likely take Shell's place when released. In 1999, the analyst worked with current Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan on a book entitled, "Think Like a Champion: Building Success One Victory at a Time." Also, three years earlier, he began working with former Broncos running back Terrell Davis on a similar book, called "TD: Dreams in Motion."Al Davis wasn't impressed with either; chances are he isn't too fond of anything Schefter puts his time into.Just hours after the report was publicized, the Raiders organization released a statement claiming it to be false, attacking Schefter along the way."Adam Schefter has always been a false rumor monger with respect to the Raiders and anti-Raider based upon his relationship with Denver and Mike Shanahan," the announcement read. The statement was referring to the same NFL analyst who, just two days earlier, included two Raiders -- Warren Sapp and Nnamdi Asomugha -- on his "Pro Bowl snubs: The best of the rest" list. The "false rumor monger" also was the first to break the news when the team agreed to a five-year contract with rookie safety Michael Huff, when fourth-rounder Darnell Bing was moved from safety to linebacker, and when Aaron Brooks won the starting quarterback job from Andrew Walter."No decisions have been made relative to the 2007 nor will they be made for some time," the statement also read. "Adam Schefter could not have gotten his information from a reliable source because there is only one reliable source and he doesn't trust Adam."The "one reliable source" is Al Davis, an owner who barely trusts his own head coach to make 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey

Ronald Curry "Deserving of a Future" Commentary

Back in March, wide receiver Ronald Curry took a $980,000 pay cut for the upcoming 2006 season. The restructured deal was a small relief for a team that was, at one point, nearly $28 million over the salary cap.Curry is currently playing under a $720,000 base salary. Meanwhile, teammates 6 Super Bowl Champions jersey black jersey
Randy Moss and Jerry Porter combine for a $12.67 million cap headache. With just one week remaining in the regular season, Curry leads the team in both receptions and yardage, despite the lack of financial backing. The 27-year-old wideout has caught a career-high 57 receptions for 680 yards. Combined, Moss and Porter have appeared in 14 games and have caught just 43 passes for 572 yards -- 14 receptions and 108 yards less than Curry."My goal was to come back, get over the injury and show 32 teams I'm healthy enough to play," the five-year vet said just a week ago. "I feel like I've done that; I feel like I've proven myself to this team."Next season, it will cost Oakland $6.5 million, which includes a $5 million bonus, to retain the 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver. If the team is looking to turn things around, it'd lock Curry in a sure deal before taking care of the two big-named, big-headed wideouts in front of No. 89."I feel like I hold a lot of value as part of the foundation of this team," Curry added. The 6-4 Moss has been targeted 97 times this season, dropped eight and has only caught 43.3 percent of balls thrown his way. Curry, on the other hand, has been thrown to 81 times, has dropped only two and has caught 70.4 percent. When Moss grabs a ball, 30 percent of the time it goes for a first down; when Curry hauls a pass in, that percentage rises nearly 16 percent.Curry's success on third down is the sole reason Oakland has been able to extend drives past four downs this season. The North Carolina grad leads the team in third-down conversions, and has three consecutive outings with eight or more receptions. In the team's Saturday night loss to the division-rival Chiefs, Curry scorched the Kansas City secondary for 106 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
yards on 11 receptions."If I'm playing well I hope they'll come back to the table with something," Curry said, looking ahead to the upcoming offseason."But if you don't win, it's not gratifying -- no matter how many plays you make."When the offseason rolls around, Oakland shouldn't be too modest with the humble Ronald Curry.ALL-NEW RaidersLive.com: Visit now to join the Raiders mailbag. special teams contributing little

There's a few ways to make your starting quarterback's Sunday a true nightmare. You can appoint Tom Walsh as your offensive coordinator. You can assemble a 72-sack offensive line. You can even hire a head coach whose No. 1 tool on gameday is a wooden clipboard that was made in 1992.The 10 Santonio Holmes White jersey
2006 proved that each of those means work. Here's another way: You can continually set your offense up with subpar field position. For Oakland, that's one of the very few aspects of the team that was bad last year but is equally as bad this season.Aside from the always-consistent All-Pro punter Shane Lechler, who boots the ball, on average, 49 yards per attempt, the Raiders rank in the bottom five in the league in nearly every major special teams category stats have to offer.Take a look. The Raiders' average starting field position is their own 27?-yard line. That's 29th in the NFL. Even last season, as nightmarish as it was, they ranked 12th in the category, averaging a starting point of just past the 31. On kick returns, Chris Carr and Dominic Rhodes have combined for a 29th-ranked 20.9 yards per attempt.Longest kick return this season: 35 yards. NFL rank: 28th.On the flip side, Oakland's special teams unit allows opposing kick returners to gain 28.2 yards. That's second last in the league. When punts go to Chris Carr or Johnnie Lee Higgins, they run 3.4 yards before falling to the ground. Mark that down as worst in the NFL.When a returner facing the Raiders fields a punt, he travels 9.2 yards before being dropped. Finally, something that's not in the bottom five in the league: 18th.Oakland's opponents begin their drives from just past the 32-yard line. That's ranked 24th. Not surprising, considering, as previously stated, the team ranks 31st and 18th in kick and punt return defense, respectively.Back 10 Santonio Holmes black jersey
to the bottom five: field goals. Sebastian Janikowski is an atrocious 60.0 percent this season (6 for 10), and is 0 for 3 outside of 50 yards with a long of 48. All of that factors out to 31st in the NFL.It looks as if the Raiders need to get some special teamers on steroids and draft a kicker in the first round.Whoops.

Q & A with cornerback Stanford Routt

cornerback Stanford Routt knows what it takes to make it in the NFL, or any other profession, for that matter. It's a "fear of failure," he says on his official Web site, SRoutt26.com. There's "no force more powerful."When you become part of a team whose secondary includes five defensive backs picked in the first three rounds of the NFL draft over the past five years, you need to face that harsh reality. Routt, a second-round pick of the Raiders in 2005, wasn't even the team's first cornerback chosen that year. He wasn't guaranteed anything. That never meant he wasn't planning on starting anytime soon, though. It took just two seasons and two games for the Austin, Texas, native to turn an immeasurable amount of unrealized potential into a reality. A starter of 4 Brett Favre Purple jersey
just four games through his first two years in the league, Routt has now started in five of Oakland's seven contests this season. He hasn't wasted any time.Routt is the only defensive back in Oakland's secondary with an interception this season -- a shocking truth, considering five different DBs had a combined 15 picks for the Raiders just a short year ago. Already in '07, Routt has snagged a career-high three interceptions. He has also registered 11 tackles (10 solo) and four passes defensed.Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with Routt about his journey in the NFL, his interests outside of the league and his new Web site, SRoutt26.com. Please take the time to visit the site and show your support.Carroll: You've had the privilege to play alongside some very talented teammates in Nnamdi Asomugha and Fabian Washington. How has working with such gifted players helped your development as a young corner in the NFL thus far?Routt: I think it's really helped me out a lot in a sense. We all lean on each other for knowledge, techniques and so forth. I've learned a lot from Nnamdi in becoming a student of the game and Fabian from just reading and reacting to what you see. But we all pick up on certain things from each other because our strengths and weaknesses are different.Carroll: You've been in the NFL for three seasons, and you've had a different coaching staff each year. Has that been difficult to adjust to? And how does the Lane Kiffin era compare to the Norv Turner and Art Shell regimes?Routt: Honestly, it really hasn't been that different for me because our defensive staff has always stayed the same for the most part. Rob Ryan (defensive coordinator) has been here all my years, so the scheme and sets have never changed. And Willie Brown (my cornerback coach) has been there as well. So I've been fortunate enough to have a pretty stable orientation. Lane Kiffin has a player-friendly approach to his coaching style. It's full of energy and he thrives off of competition. Art Shell had more of an old-school demeanor that he brought to the game.Carroll: Since you were drafted out of Houston in 2005, you've spent a lot of time working primarily as a nickel corner. This year, you're beginning to split time as a starter with Fabian Washington. When do you see yourself becoming a full-time, 16-game starter in the NFL?Routt: I see myself as a full-time starter right now. 'Cause no matter what the situation is, I'm usually in the game. Even when my partner Fabian is in, I'm usually going to the slot playing nickel.Carroll: How close do you feel the Raiders are to finally becoming contenders again? Routt: The distance between your thumb and index finger. 36 Bettis Black Jersey
We are very close. We show it in spurts all the time. And if you can do it in spurts, then you can do it always. That's the way I see it.Carroll: The team's safeties -- specifically fourth-year FS Stuart Schweigert -- have taken a lot of heat lately for not making the necessary or "big" plays. Being able to work so closely with both Schweigert and Michael Huff, do you believe they are being unfairly criticized?Routt: Absolutely! It's very unfair. They try to scrutinize a tackle they may miss here and there, but they don't say anything about the many plays they do make. But that's how the media is -- always trying to find a story. That's why I don't ever look at a newspaper unless it's in the offseason.Carroll: Growing up, were there any particular NFL players you looked up to? Are there any players currently in the NFL you particularly look up to now or have a special bond with? Routt: Growing up I always looked up to Deion Sanders. I can't think of any corner in today's game that didn't. Now, I currently try to really study who I believe to be the top corners in today's game -- Asante Samuel, Champ Bailey, Charles Woodson -- to see what makes them good and see what I can take from them. As far as special bonds go, I have that with everyone in our secondary.Carroll: Despite working under three different head coaches, coordinator Rob Ryan has been your defensive coach since your rookie season. How has your relationship with him grown over the past three seasons? Can you envision Ryan one day becoming an NFL head coach?Routt: My relationship with Rob Ryan is great as far as I can tell. He understands me as a player and I understand him as a coach. You just always want to play your heart out for him. I think with his passion and intensity for the game of football, he would make a great head coach someday. He's got the pedigree in him.Carroll: You ran the fastest 40-yard dash at the 2005 NFL combine, so you know speed. For a linebacker, how quick and athletic is Thomas Howard really?Routt: In one word: Very! He makes so many plays from the backside with just sheer speed, it's ridiculous. And when he drops into pass coverage, he also has a pretty mean vertical. Hence he has four INTs through just seven games. And he's still only a second-year player!Carroll: On your website, SRoutt26.com, you feature musical artists such as Cassidy, Nas, Kanye West, Nelly and Jay-Z. Are these the artists who prepare you mentally for the games on Sundays? Do you have any other special pre-game rituals?Routt: Yes. I definitely love all those guys. You can throw T.I. and Young Jeezy in there as well. As far as pre-game rituals go, I always pray in the end zone and send a kiss to heaven for my grandmother.Carroll: While I'm on the topic, are you excited for Jay-Z's release of his next album, "American Gangster," on Nov. 6?Routt: Definitely. Will be there bright and early to pick it up. Very, very big fan.Carroll: Tell us a little more about the Routt 2 Success? Foundation and how people can contribute to this great cause.Routt: Well, growing up as a kid I feel what helped me most from staying out of trouble was that I was always involved in sports and I was too busy to get caught up in all the negative things kids get into after school (drugs, alcohol, gangs, etcetera). And my program has a mission to provide kids with positive activities to do after school to keep them away from the pitfalls of being a teen in our society. It is especially geared toward kids with single parents. They have it the toughest. I just adore kids and I want to see them succeed in life and 2010 pro bowl Vikings 4 Brett Favre jersey
not sell themselves short in any way. Whether we want to accept it or not, they are our future.(For more information on the Routt 2 Success? Foundation, a non-profit organization, contact r2sfoundation@sroutt26.com.)Carroll: Time to put you on the spot: How many interceptions will you finish the year with?Routt: At least three. I'll say that much ...Please take a moment to visit Stanford Routt's official site, SRoutt26.com -- featuring post-game audio blogs by Routt himself, mobile updates, media galleries and much more. ,
